Help! Rookie Needs Portland Setup

by bjma » Sat, 08 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi Gang,

I'm new to ICR2 and do well on ovals, but suck on a road course.

I've downloaded some good setups for Australia, Long Beach and Laguna
but could use a good Portland setup.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Brent

Here is a setup which with some practice should get you under 1 minute.
It is based on the 1.02 patched version.

Fuel:            22  gallons            1st Gear: 11.90
Steering Lock:   12  degrees            2nd Gear:  9.40
Stagger:        -0.200  inches          3rd Gear:  8.20
                                        4th Gear:  7.00
Front Wing:     16.60                   5th Gear:  6.20
Rear Wing:      12.80                   6th Gear:  5.50

Boost Level:     0
Front Anti-Roll: 7
Rear Anti-Roll:  4
Brake Bias:      6

   TIRE         COMPOUND     PSI      CAMBER     SHOCK
 Right Front    Soft          36      -2.30       100%
 Right Rear     Soft          33      -1.70       80%
 Left Rear      Soft          37      -1.70       90%
 Left Front     Soft          35      -2.20       70%

For qualifying I reduce the front wing to 16.20 and the fuel to 12
gallons.  My best time was 1:00.2 and I am not the best of drivers out
there, by a long shot!

I have setups which get me under 56 sec qual laps and 57 sec race laps.
These will do you little good if u cant get around the track the right
way. Michaels setup is a good solid nuetral setup, my setups are twitchy
and would do you little good as a beginner.
They key thing to get you through a road course I have found is being
as clean a possible in and out of the turns. This means not stamping on
the brakes at the last moment and stampin on the gas. I have found that
entering a corner by slowing earlier than I could and feathering the gas
through the turn while keeping a solid line so you can get on the gas
early and keep on it all the way out of the turn.
A usual turn consists of three phases. Coming in at full accel I get on
the brakes till I am at a speed that I can hold optimum line through the
turn. THis should be done before you have to turn in order to not upset
the car. The next phase is the turn in . I usually coast or gently
feather the gas depending on the turn. The car should be using all tire
adhesion here for cornering you should be done braking and not yet
acceling out. The last phase is the exit. When your car is at a point
when you can increase throttle to full without letting off without going
off the road is the key here. The first phase entry speed is sacrifised
so you can exit earlier on the gas, this will do more good than entering
the turn with the brakes on fire.
Hope this helps, let me know if u have any ?
