Eidos F1: Demo vs. Game

by aws600 » Sun, 18 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Can anyone confirm if the actual Official F1 Racing is better than the demo
available for download?  My main two questions are....

Is there an increase in detail while in the***pit view?
Can the sensitivity of the pedals be adjusted?

I did something amazingly stupid and that was order the game before playing
the demo.  Well I just played the demo and was shocked to see that the level
of detail in the graphics is below that of UbiSoft's F1RS (which is several
years older). Also the brakes and gas appear to be either ON or OFF with very
little middle ground.

Will I ever learn?

Well, in general I'd suggest you read my review at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/, but specifically to answer your
questions, I never tried the demo so I can't compare.  You can't
adjust the sensitivity of the pedals though.  Control configuration is
very simplistic.

It is a bit below F1RS, but it runs quite well on medium machines in
both software and hardware modes, and this was undoubtedly necessary
partially for mirrors and also for picture-in-picture events (which is
very cool in MPlayer, you can see your opposition wiping out no matter
where on the track they are! <G>).  Anyway, just realize they show
more stuff generally faster than F1RS...but yes, image quality is
definitely below F1RS.

Hm, braking does have to be gentle, but brake bias adjustments in the
***pit help a lot there.  Gas is definitely not on/off in the full
game in my opinion.

Now THAT I can't tell you.. :)

I did read your review and much of the flame war that followed. It was your
review that influenced my purchase.  I'm new to all out driving sims and
wanted something to cut my teeth on, and this seemed like it might be the
game.  Most mail order places are selling it for ~$24, so it didn't seem like
much of a risk.  I should have tried out the demo before purchasing, but I
didn't.  After playing the demo, I found a few things that drove me nuts but
I think I can live with them.

The game plays and looks very good if played from the***pit view without
any view of the car or***pit.  I do wish there was a bit more detail and
better displays in the***pit so I could use the standard F1RS type view.  I
also found the controls to be a bit touchy.  Hopefully these things will have
been massaged a bit in the actual game, but like I said, I think I can live
with them.

I will say that this game is probably not for the folks who enjoy GPL, SCGT
and TOCA2.  It has a different feel and it's one that I can see offending
many.  On the other hand, I own both SCGT, TOCA2, and F1RS and can still
enjoy this too.

I'm rambling.  Thanks for the review, and the followup.
