Help me somebody, you are my only hope...

I'm having a serious problem at the moment.  Guys, please help me.
I'm using somebody else's computer so I will try everything possible
to sortout my problem.  I'm really in deep shite if I'm forced to
format 'cause I don't want to lose all the info I have (I can't
partition my HD because it's full)

Let's recap a little bit :)    I load up Rally Trophy, and I see that
my calibration is out of range.  I load up the Windows 98 game control
panel, and I see that it's not calibrated correctly.  I load up the
dxinput utility to reset the calibration range.  It doesn't work, so I
then install Thrustmapper.  Of course, after installing it I restarted
my computer as asked.

BUT... when I booted up again I found out that everything in my
windows "device manager" had dissapeared.  Yes, you know...
right-click on MyComputer/Properties/Device Manager.  I see nothing
there, it has all dissapeared.  Is there a place where Windows has
backed up and stored the information found in that panel???  Is this
found in the registry?  I still have all my drivers present, they are
just not associated anymore so I'm stuck in safe-mode.  Please,
somebody help me.  I only have 10minutes on this PC I can use, so I'll
only check out the email 2-3 times tomorrow.  Email me at

will be rewarded by my gratitude.

LOL :)

Thanks for those who said to use scanreg /restore (Steve, Will, Kevin,
etc..).  My last registry was of April 2001, but it's better the none.  It
looks like the information found in the Device Manager is stored in that.  A
couple of stuff will need to be updated to their current version, but that's
mostly all.  Windows doesn't want to sort by type, but I'll find a way
around that.  :)

A Win system needs a reformat once every 6 months to run smooth anyway. :)
If you want to start fresh, get a new HD, (You said it was full) install the
old one as slave or second and keep it intact for a year or till you need
the space.
This way you can pick the files you need when you need them. If you try to
backup your drive and then reformat it, there will always be something you
forgot to save.

Jone.

Boot to DOS, (press F8 a few times after it leaves the first screen on a
cold boot. Make sure your CD is workinmg in DOS. Run setup.exe from the Win
98 CD and install Win 98. With luck it will pickup existing settings, and
reinstall the drivers as the inf files will or should still be known my
Windows.
Before that, run any diagnostic progras lkike Nortons, Scandisk, that you
are able to in Safe Mode to minimise any further issues

Backup your registry manually then you want have that problem again. Another
option is to get WinXP. With WinXP you can restore the reg to last good one,
restore complete system, roll back any driver to the last one. XP is great
for when you run into these kinds of problems, which everyone will at some
time or another. But if your harddrive goes down then you are SOL unless you
fork out the money for something like Norton's Ghost or Drivecopy. With
these programs you can make an image file of any partiton or harddrive and
resotre it in a matter of minutes. You will need a cdr to back them up onto
though.

This won't help you deal with the immediate situation either, but if you don't
want to go to Windows XP, I would recommend GoBack, by Roxio.  It has saved my
bacon countless times, and would have corrected this particular problem for you,
as well.  The only downside:  It takes up 10% of your HD space for it's history
file.

Good Luck.

Yeah well I was almost sure that Win98SE backed up the registry at least
once a week.  I was wrong.

I'm just over-confident over my PC.  Eh :)

I thought it was supposed to back it up every day.

BRH,

I'm a GoBack fan, too, but what is your experience with its effect on games?
I ininstalled mine because I thought it was interfering with performance as
it scrambled to back up things that were going on.

Yeah well it looks like mine doesn't :(

Speaking of this, I'm unable to sort files by Type in my folders.  Even if
I'm forcing "Like current folders" or even if I reset all the folders.  Each
time I go to another folder, it comes back to sorting them by date (which
makes no sense).

Windows Registry Checker automatically backs up and checks for errors in the
registry every time you boot up, assuming you have it enabled.
Go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information, click on
Tools, System Configuration Ultility, Startup, and make sure the box
ScanRegistry is checked.

Well it's sure checked, if something like that happens again how can I
restore from the previous registry?

Assuming you've booted up five times with Registry Checker enabled,
the last five registry backups are stored in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP directory.
the files will be rb00x.cab (the highest number x will be the most recent)
You can also force a registry backup at any time by hitting Start, then Run,
then entering scanregw. Good thing to do before trying anything dicey on your
system as you'll be able to restore to the moment before you did anything.

To restore:
1) Reboot to the command promt(hold down the Ctrl key at restart, and choose
option 5 from the startup menu)

2)At the commmand promt, type: scanreg/restore  and press Enter.

Registry Checker will scan the registry again and display the last five most
recent backups listed by date. Highlight the one you want to restore and hit
Enter. Press enter again to restart.

Go through the whole process, force a backup, see the file in the SYSBCKUP
directory, and do a restore. That way you'll remember next time shit hits the
fan.
