I've been using NTLWorld via a BT line since it started and found it OK.
It's "free" - 15/month but you can offset that against voice calls.

I've now got ISDN :) Pings are noticeably better.

NTLworld for me. You need to check that you live in an NTL area -
www.askntl.com

My NTL landline costs 4.50 per month and internet use is free and unlimited
(on an 0800 number). Once your line is installed you have to wait for NTL to
send you a (free) CD with your login and password details - my CD took 3
weeks to arrive but the length of wait varies. In some areas I know people
have had waits of several months to get this CD, and there doesn't seem to
be any way to use the 0800 without it.

No complaints at all about the service - I always connect first time and
pings / download rates are good. It's nice to know you can spend hours
playing GPL online without it costing you a penny :0)

NTL Cable Modem is the best unless you can get ADSL in your area... it's
128kbit faster uploading than NTL but NTL plan to change that soon I am
told :)

You are one of the lucky ones then.

NTL cablemodem has consistently been a royal pain in the ass. Wait till you
start getting daily line dropping at best and 3-5 days at a time where there
is no line at all in the worst case senario......

Hi Tony,

I'm pondering ISDN.

Do you mind telling me how much it costs and who you're getting it from?
Does it give you 'free' access?
I'm currently on BT anytime through a 56k modem which costs 15/month
for 24/7 0800 access.

Thanks

Kev

BT Home Highway (which as far as we're concerned is the same as ISDN) will
cost about 50 for conversion and 35 a month which includes a call
allowance of about 10 a month. This cost is instead of what you currently
pay for your phoneline.
You can use this with most ISP's who offer surftime or anytime, though the
ISP's who support it will only give 64k single channel access for the free
calls. If you wanted the extra speed of 128k (2X64k dual channel bonding)
you would have to pay the cost of 2 simultaneous phonecalls.
To be honest, 64k ISDN is fine, net browsing and *** is a lot better than
analogue modem and downloads are a bit faster but much more reliable. 128k
is better if you are downloading large files though, except it costs an arm
and a leg ;)

<snip>
I got it from BT, AFAIK they are the only suppliers of ISDN lines. There's a
deal on where you pay 49.50 for installation and 39.99 / month rental for
BT-Together (which includes 13.00 of calls and free off-peak Internet
access). On top of that (I didn't realise at the time) I have to pay 3.99 /
month to Freeserve to use the off-peak access.

24/7 is available but costs more (both BT and ISP) and I decided that my
day-time usage didn't warrant it.

The main reason I went for ISDN was to get two phone lines as well as my
Internet line - I had a number of complaints that people could not get
through when I was using NTLWorld for hours on end. It is also quicker but
much of the time speed is limited by the ISP.

I recommend www.solwise.co.uk both for more information (more concise than
BT) and also parts. I bought my TA from them - about 25.00 for an Asus PCI
card - as well as the ISDN installation. Check out ng's with ISDN or
BROADBAND in them too.

I found the whole thing a bit of a minefield, I suppose it's just like
getting into any new technical area but I'm not sure I've done it the best
way I could.

Does it still disconnect every 2 hours?

Yes NTLworld does disconnect you every 2 hours. It will also cut out if the
connection has not been used for a period of 5 minutes. The 5-minute cut-off
isn't a problem as you never notice it, but the 2 hour cut-off is irritating
until you get used to it.

Sorry, forgot to mention the cut-offs. I don't really notice any problems
but I'm trained to redial before joining a long VROC race :0)
