Anyone still using a Vortex2 card?

by double » Mon, 18 Feb 2002 06:03:00

Is anyone still using a Vortex2 sound card?  I can't get the crackling to go
away in NR2002, and I've got a Diamond MX300 gathering dust in the closet.
I'm wondering if it's worth trying out again in XP.

I know the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is the preferred SB Live/Audigy
alternative, but I don't have $61 at the moment in time to spend on one.

I have the Aueal Vortex 2 oem...probably on par with the Aureal 1500.
Been using the 2048 drivers for two or 3 years.  As the Brits say..."No
Worries"

I thought the Aussies said "no worries"... oh well.

I'd be using my Vortex2 rather than my SBLive since I've always gotten
better performance out of it, but it doesn't tend to work too well in
XP and I can't get my DSL modem to work in Win98. Tradeoffs...

Dang that has to be frustrating.  How does the DSL connect to your
system?  With a NIC card or with USB?
The original windows98 didn't have very good USB support, even with a USB
patch.  98se handles USB much better.   If it's connected via a NIC card, I
can't explain why it shouldn't be working.

No, it's a dinky internal PCI modem. I'd like to get an external modem
in the future, but my budget's too tight right now.

OK, my chance to repay all the help I get from this board.

I got the infamouse Vortex 2 cards and I seem able to run 2002 ok most
of the time, my system is p3 850, Hercules Geforce2 MX (before the 2
chioces) in a BX6 r2 motherboard Running XP, and another (wife's) with p3
700 in Abit BH6 r1.1 with a voodoo5 card waiting for network card before I
update this one to XP (running 98se).  these were good machines back when
GPL was in its heyday, course they only had slot 1 p2 450's in them back
then.

got questions?  Ill try and help. there is a good site for vortex stuff.

Yeah, I've got a question, last time I asked it here, I got no help.  I have a
Diamond Monster Sound MX300 running on Windows 98.  When I originally got Roger
Wilco, I had a very weak mike output and someone told me a value to change in
Windows Registry to bring it up to an acceptable level.  Now I've re-installed
Windows, and can't for the life of me figure out how to get it back to a decent
level.  Got any ideas?

That didn't sound right.  A couple of very nice people gave suggestions, but
nothing I hadn't already tried.

Ok, here's the situation:  the sound works nearly perfectly nearly 95% of the
time.  Quake, Grand Prix Legends, Tomb Raider, etc. all run fine.  MP3s,
streaming audio, etc. all work fine.  The only problem comes to Nascar 4 (demo)
and Nascar 2002 (demo).  All the sounds work fine except for the in-car engine
sound.  I can hear the other cars' engines, my own skids, gearshifts, etc.  All
the sounds are there during replays, just no engine sound while running.  I
have 3d audio disabled and 8 max sounds selected.  I even tried putting the
suggested audio settings in the core.ini.  What else can I do?

320 MB SDRAM
10 GB disk space
MSI Starforce Geforce2 Pro
Turtle Beach Montego2 (Vortex2)
Windowz 2000 SP2

Thanks!

Wow, I had completely lost this thread...  That is my system I spec'd out
there at 1st, and I got to tell you for the 1st week or so I had absolutely
no problems with IN car view and engine sounds...

HOWEVER  since way back when I posted about "all is well",  I have been
battling the exact same problem you are!  I haven't found anything to fix it
yet either...  Something in XP seems to be deciding to change shit in my
system!  I had not played with anymore settings when it was working, but for
some reason in the device manager I have 2 new entries in where you find the
soundcard... (unfortunately Im at work and I cant remember what they are but
something pertaining to "basic sound compatibility device") and when I use
the icon in the tray to adjust my speaker volume, the PC speaker (inside the
case) beeps instead of the default sound emanating through the stereo
speaker hooked to soundcard (that usually dings or whatever so you can tell
the change in volume).  This is really freaking me out, and so I'm prolly
gonna find new cards....  as I finally give up.

My work around has been to adjust the sound settings just before going into
a race... usually switch 3d on exit the options then go back in and 3d
off....  then I would have incar sounds.  but when it doesn't take I use the
roof cam, because you cant get back in when race starts ya know.  I did find
it beneficial one time at dega, that I couldn't hear my engine, and I had
opponents sound down low, to actually listen to the tires scrub/grip...
did that for 5 laps or so in a race and totally re-did my racing line...
but
I think the game sux without some feedback from the engine, like "is it
spinning the tires", you can usually tell by the engine how well it is
pulling, or slipping out of the corners, before you see it, or even hear the
tires letting go of the grip.

Grand Prix Legends isn't still in it's heyday?  With the new Honda coming out
and awesome new cars from GPLEA as well as 16-bit track textures, it's as
beautiful as ever.  Perhaps I should get a new Athlon XP and motherboard.
Maybe that will cure my N2002 sound problems! :)
