SCGT - adjustable AI with AOE?

by Bill Jone » Tue, 11 Jan 2000 04:00:00

In SCGT, it seems if you play the game without the Advanced Options Editor,
the AI is fairly easy to beat when set at the easiest level.  However, when
using the AOE and you are in "simulation" mode, the AI opponents aren't
affected but you are.  In other words, the "simulation" mode of the AOE
makes your car have more realistic handling characteristics (i.e. less grip)
and hence slower lap times, but the AI cars still have the same times and it
is impossible (for me) to beat them.  Is there any way to adjust this so the
AI cars are affected by the AOE utility?

SCGT - adjustable AI with AOE?

Hi Bill. Have you tried just running SCGT with the opponent difficulty set
to its highest? I've always thought that SCGT has the best physics engine
going. I'll admit that these are  probably the easiest cars to model, but
they shouldn't be sliding all over the place. The GTQ cars (which of course
don't really exist) loaded with all the options is an extrememly good
representation of what a GT3 car feels like. They probably did the best work
on this. The GT1s are good  too.  I think the mark is missed a little on the
GT3 &2s,  only because I'm not aware of any GT3s that can go over 190 mph
down the straights (I could be  wrong). I think less grip would make SCGT
just another sim that couldn't figure out the physics engine and opted for
the icey track feel instead. I think GPL (which I'm hooked on now, grrrr)
captures the high speed physics well, but not the low speed. I'm almost
certain these cars could pull 1G on a 100' skid pad, but the physics model
must be a nightmare to program and get as close as they did. (Well, except
the sand trap at Parabolica on Monza. It should slow you down and instead
you glide across it like you're on ice.) I think it was on this ng a few
months ago that there was a vote for the worst PC sim ever. The winner was
Sega's Touring Car Championship, where you could actually stop your car on a
banked corner and watch it slide to the infield. Now that's less grippy :)
Enjoy your racing.

I can't beat the AI at the lowest setting.  How could I beat them at the
highest?  Do you mean without using the Advanced Options Editor utility?

Yes, without the AOE utility. The game is quite realistic right out of the
box. Making the cars slippery might be fun if the game isn't challenging
anymore, but it doesn't make it a more accurate sim.  These (real) cars are
quick, grippy and nimble. They toss around quite nicely. If you figure you
could come out of a corner at 80mph in your family sedan, don't you think a
GT3 car should do a little better? :)
