N2 and smartdrv?

by dav.. » Wed, 18 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I am running N2 in dos on an P 100 w/ 16 meg.
Should I use smartdrv? If so, what setting to use? I can't find
anything in the manual on this? Nothing on setting the best dos config
an autoexec for game performance at all?!? (Or did I miss it?)

You don't really need it - N2 is not disk bound at all - so speeding up
disk i/o at the cost of memory is probably a losing proposition.  /THansen

Thanks for the info but, since I am running the small install, (I
thought I would NEVER fill that 1.6 gig hehe) the track loads are
kinda long. Thought disk caching might move things along a bit. Am I
off base?

The track loads are long because they are coming off the CD for the
minimal install... Most CDs have a small cache already. I don't think
that smartdrv will help your load speeds. In any case, it will take
memory away from the program for when the track is actually loaded, so
if you're already short on RAM (8-16MB), I'd bag smartdrv and just wait
a little longer to load the track.
