CART PR--Preferred Racing View?

As a newbie to the racing sim genre, I'm interested in what view you
all use during the race.  It would seem that the***pit would be the
purist place to set your view, but I can see things better from just
outside, up and behind the car.  When I'm in the***pit, I
unconsciously raise my head up to better my perspective--walls and
turns seem more difficult to judge compared to the outside view.  What
do you 'pros' do????

I only run from the***pit view for the most realism. The only time I hit
arcade view is when I'm damaged, and wanna see if my bumper fell off <g>

Hi Dan,

While you can see more of the track from higher up, it's more
difficult to tell how the car is behaving. While you are in the
***pit the whole screen shifts, and you can very rapidly determine
the nature and extent of slides. When you are behind the car, you have
to look for your car moding relative to the scenery. With everything
moving (and a smaller visual target) it is much more difficult to
determine if/when your car has started to slide, and how much to
correct.

In short, arcade view is actually more difficult to drive, at least
once you have learned the circuit.

Cheers!
John

That's what I was going to say - the only thing the arcade views
are good for in my opinion is learning the road courses... once
you learn the "sequence" of lefts and rights, it's no longer useful
because it's almost impossible to get your turn in points and
lines correct and consistent... (also brake points, but I'm not
a die hard, so I always have to use auto-braking on the road
courses...)

Dan,

     I'm no pro,but I prefer to drive in the***pit mode,since this
is the closest to the real thing as we can get. Driving from the
arcade views is easier, especially for the newbie, but in the long run
you are not doing yourself any favor. If your interested in simulation
racing, then stick with the***pit view and
practice,practice,practice.

I appreciate the responses---I tried the***pit view for about 15
minutes and then gave up.  Just find it hard to see things, especially
finding corners.  I have played one track exclusively--Cleveland.  So
I know the track inside out.  Still I'm finding it hard to ID turns
when I come to them.  Frankly, I think the graphics leave something to
be desired.  I've got a Orchid Righteous/Mystique combo and a PII 266
so I've got the best graphics the game can provide.  Still....those
jagged walls, indistinct corners are really a problem.  Maybe I need
to spend more time in the***pit.  I will admit, you do get a better
feel for car handling and the race experience in the car.  I wish MS
had the state of the art graphics so I could  see better.  D3D doesn't
cut it for me.

Man, get the heck out of Cleveland!  I agree with you on that track.  Try Long
Beach or Portland, and you'll notice immediately that the corners are easier
to see, you can "pick your apex" much easier, etc.
