More Yellows in NR2002?

by BearMtn6 » Fri, 22 Mar 2002 09:46:30

When running 100% length races in NR2002, there are very few cautions caused
by AI cars.  Can anyone suggest anything to help?

I have already tried lowering the ai draft distance in the track.ini files,
which helps a bit, but really only on restarts. (It also turns Daytona into
a demolition derby - great for learning to dodge big wrecks!)

Is there a way to cause the yellow to come out when an AI car blows up?

Is there a way to cause AI cars to spin on their own more often?

BTW, there are enough yellows at Martinsville, Bristol, and Darlington -
this is more for tracks like Las Vegas, California, etc.

Thanks in advance to any help you can offer!

I wouldn't worry about having few yellows at places like vegas or
california.  The very nature of those tracks causes most races in real life
to have a below average number of yellows.

Actually, those places (include Michigan and Homestead) generally have few
cautions, as they're fairly smooth surfaced and very wide. Having few cautions
makes sense there.

But I've always wondered why they can't program in yellows for AI blown motors
(N3 and I'm sure N4 and NR2002 as well have them when the player's engine
explodes).

Check out the forums over at www.bhmotorsports.com the was a guy awhile back
that was playining with the ini files for more yellows due to AI break
downs. If I remeber correctly he had some sucsess, but it was more for blown
tires than motors. It may give you more of what your loooking for. It may
have been for N4 but would probably work for NR2002 as well.

The 2 tracks you mention specifically, and places like Homestead and
Michigan all typically dont have a lot of yellows. I think its due to how
wide and smooth the tracks are and the nature of the racing at these places,
which ends up being a lot of single file racing. Blown AI motors are likely
not an issue since the really don't put oil down on the track. If a Cup car
looses an engine and can get to the apron without oiling the track, NASCAR
typically won't throw the yeller flag either.

Any tracks in particular?  Also what AI strength?  I run at 100% and
I've seen around 5-7 cautions in every race.

Nope.  Nor is there a way to cause this in real life.

Not that I'm aware of.  You may want to check papy_ai.ini which, IIRC,
has some parameters controlling the consistency of the AI (which I
believe is what determines most accidents, at least the self-spins).

Weird.  Haven't tried California (although I'm pretty sure there are
rarely cautions there in real life) but at Las Vegas I'm lucky if I
get through 5 laps without at least one wreck somewhere, with the AI
going 3 wide all over the place.

I just watched the Atlanta 500 WC race (we have to wait a while east of the
big pond) and they put out yellows because a car was smoking badly on the
track (I assume due to potential oil hazard). Is that not the same thing?

cheers

Yep, you're correct.  Actually, there IS usually a yellow when a car blows
up, because they DO put a lot of fluids down.

Yes, if there is debris on the track the yellow will come out.

This rule is also accurately modelled in N2002.
