GPL Distorted Sound

by Russell Spearin » Wed, 05 Feb 2003 18:32:32

Hi all,

I am running GPL on Windows 2000 Profesional and am having some problems
with distorted sound. When the engine is at low revs the sound doesn't sound
too bad, but as you accelerate the sound gets more and more distorted. This
is not all the time. Sometimes it starts off ok, but then I'll crash, and
the sound is distorted after the crash. Sometimes it starts off distorted
and then I'll crash and the sound is fine after the crash. Sometimes the
sound never seems to correct itself.

This was never a problem on Windows 98SE. I've done a search on Google
groups and it appears other people have had the same issue with Windows NT.
However I couldn't seem to find a solution to the problem (if one exists).

My sound card is a SounBlaster Live 1024 running the latest Creative
drivers.

Any help would be grately appreciated

Regards

Russell

Exact the same thing here, but with Soundblaster Live and Windows XP Pro
SP1, latest drivers from Creative, Motherboard with AMD760-chipset.
Never had those problems in Windows 98 SE and Windows Me.

Yes!

This happens with Win2k/XP and SB Live cards. There really isn't any
perfect solution for this... you could try reducing the sound hardware
acceleration to "basic" (worked for me with my Live 5.1), or try
different drivers. I got the best results with the drivers that came
on the CD with the card; the engine sound got distorted only if I did
a shift-r while keeping the revs at max rpm, and that's quite easy to
avoid.

Some have reported that lowering the volume in GPL options to about
25% (and increasing the volume on your speakers/amplifier) has helped
with distorted sounds.

OK, I had this exact problem in XP Home, and like you had no problems
in Win98 SE...

NONE of the following tips worked for me but did for some others:

Reduce hardware accelleration in steps to see what gives best results.
Try different drivers.
Reduce volume (though I suspect this is for a different type of
distortion)
Buy a Fortissimo III (introduced stuttering even with latest drivers).

This, however, worked perfectly:
Use on-board sound (if available)
Buy an Audigy 2!

On board sound worked fine for GPL, but N2K2 didn't like it, and by
that point I'd spent *days* jumping through hoops so thought "F*ck it!
- Spend the cash"

Sorry...

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for your reply. I like to play many old-school games and most of them
have trouble running in Win XP, so I will go and buy a (hm, dont know in
english) slot, where I can change the harddisks like a diskette and install
my Windows Me on one of the harddisks.
Greetings
Stephan

GPL Distorted Sound

Hi all,

Haha, it's fixed. Many thanks to you all. Reducing the hardware acceleration
in DXDIAG to basic acceleration has cured the distorted sound. There doesn't
seem to be any reduction in sound quality or frame rate in GPL either which
is welcome. Also, luckily, you don't have to reboot the PC after adjusting
the hardware acceleration, so I can just reduce it when I want to run GPL
and then when I've finished just put it back up to full acceleration again
without any reboots required.

I am so, so glad that I have found a cure for this problem. I hope it works
the same for everyone else as well.

Many thanks once again

Russell

Ahhh, I love you all. I just upgraded from WinME to Win2000Pro (hey Dave
Henrie, get with the program, ya technophobe ;)  ) a couple of weeks ago
but never got around to reinstalling GPL until the other day. Distortion
up the ying-yang. I turned accel down a notch but it didn't help. I
never though to turn it all the way down.

Thanks !

I use win2k too with a SB 5.1. I have the sound acceleration set one up from
the lowest & it doesn't distort. I have to turn the windows volume almost
down to zero to avoid the popping & crackling though. Oddly enough on
another PC I have virtually the same setup but a SB128 (only 2 speakers) and
it's fine on full acceleration.
