Top 10 Excuses with for F1 drivers with Traction Control...

by Jan Koh » Wed, 02 May 2001 01:21:10

Now that they've got Traction control, we'll see a whole NEW set of
excuses as to why their performance wasn't up to par...here's the list.

10.    "We had a bug in the program, we're waiting for McLaren to put out the 1.01 patch.."
            (aka Autosport, http://www.racesimcentral.net/)
9.    "He must've enabled the cheat codes, I think he typed "IWANNAWIN" and he just drove
        off from us..."
8.    "I think we're having a hardware conflict.  Every time the engine revs past 9,000 rpm, I get
            the Blue Screen of Death..."
7.    "Mika was railriding, just passed all of us in the chiquane..."
6.    "I should've calibrated my controller before the race..."
5.    "I know it was a warp.  He drove through me like he didn't even see me..."
4.    "I had to hit Shift-R about 5 times...stupid newbies"
3.    "I think we need to model the aerodynamics better...I kept getting airborne off the chiquanes..."
2.    "Stupid mistake...I hit the ESC key on the starting grid..."

And the number one excuse for traction control...

"I KNOW Schumacher sent me a virus, I hit the gas and the engine went dead.  It said something
like 'All your base are belong to us' on the screen..."

Cheers!

LOL  : D
BTW,  to make a modern F1 simulator game more realistic, should I drive with
the automatic gear setting now? Will future games all be automatic gears
only?

I don't think any of the teams are running with fully automatic
gearboxes, *yet*.  Of course, before long, they will all have traction
control, coupled with launch control for the starts.

However, as far as I know, there are no F1 sims based on the 2001
season, so why does this matter?!

Shouldn't that be "All your race are belong to us"?

Weird, all the in-car video I have seen of Barcelone shows no action by the
driver's hand to upshift/downshift.

p.s. :  Nice to see you around, Rick.  We were just talking about your NROS
stats back in the other NG :)

You dont normally see it anyway - it's only a tiny flick of the fingers
behind the wheel

Thats because the trannies are like those in Mobil 1 Rally.  You engage it
and the computer does the rest.  The most the drivers do now is hit the big
downchange button.  The computer will downshift during braking but they have
a second button that signals the computer to downchange rapidly without
waiting for the other perameters to be met.  The exact number of downshifts
probably can be adjusted from track to track but they use it when going from
6th or 7th down to 2nd or 3rd in one quick sequence.
Kinda miss the days when a driver had to reach down for the shifter on the
side of the***pit.

No.. be sure that I was indeed watching the little changes in wrist position
and fingers.  Pedro De La Rosa had fully automatic gears I'm 100% sure.  His
hands and fingers (that you could all see) were positionned tight on the
wheel and it was impossible for him to shift any gears that way.

Anyway I don't see the reason why a driver has to change gears.  It's a
purely mechanical thing that shouldn't be something a driver needs to care
about.  I'm talking about a race car, of course.

On a similar note yet so far distant, I remember back in Indianapolis 500:
The Simulation by Papyrus, you could do on-track setup changes.  You could
with practice develop some sort of unique *** that would simply follow
the torque by pulling down the gears on the straights.

On Speedvision's coverage they had a shot of Barrichello approaching a corner
and he hit a button on the upper left front of his steering wheel that caused
the car to downshift a pre-set number of gears.  Steve Matchett, the former
Benetton mechanic who is now a commentator for Speedvision, speculated that
the teams would all be using the automatic system for upchanges, but that some
teams (if not all) would still downhshift on their own.

Matchett also mentioned that the reason that power steering is banned now that
traction control has returned is because the teams could use the information
from the steering input to affect grip levels - a kind of active braking
system similar to what McLaren were banned from using a couple of years ago.

Provided the electronics has a track map, of course - there are times
when you want to shift other than at the the optimum max-acceleration
shift point...

Mika Hakkinen said (in the post-race interview) that he was babying his car
towards the end of the Spanish GP - taking it easy on throttle and brakes
and also short-shifting. Of course, it didn't do him any good in the end,
but the fact that he could short shift seems to indicate that he has a fair
amount of control over his upshift timings.

Actually,  I would think a few laps with a data aquistion device
collecting shift points would be all they need.  The driver could most
likely run laps with his hands off the wheel.   I'm gonna figure out a way
to run Rallye races in stadiums...then I'll be in control of the best
drivers left in racing, I'll get a piece of the parking $$, some from
Concessions, and I'll be able to sell the local Subaru and Mitsubishi
dealerships advertising.   All I have to is convince Richard Burns to lose
his accent, and Tommy Hakkinen to change his name to Tommy Hawk.
You heard it here first folks....
