How much computer do you need?

I've been trying some of the demos: ICR2, TNFS, etc.  How much computer
do you need to get 640x480 with reasonable frame rates and graphics?  I
have an Intel 486dx-100, 16 meg memory, a local bus #9 XGE (S3-864).
ICR2 is marginal at 640x480.  I tried UNIVBE.  Still pretty bad.  The
demo of TNFS won't do 640x480 on a 486.  Can it be forced?  How can I
tweak my system to get better results?  I am going to try to over-clock
my system with a 38 or 40 mhz oscmod.  Any suggestions are welcome.

I can only speak about The Need For Speed.  When I first got the game I
was running it on a DX2/66.  Obviously it was terrible.  Soon thereafter
I upgraded to a DX4/120 w/2mb VLB Diamond Stealth Video..  I thought the
game was awesome.  Played it for a month or two.

Then I got a second machine - a Pentium 120.  I've haven't played TNFS on
the 486 since...  The controllability of the car was DRASTICALLY
different on the Pentium.  The car reacted so much better to the controls
- my lap times decreased instantly.

FYI, the box says "Pentium 90" or above.  I'd concur with that.  You can
run it just fine on the DX4/100 but you won't experience all that TNFS
has to offer until you get a Pentium.

Good luck!
