I know this is off-topic, but y'all seem to be relatively on the cutting
edge of pc technology so i thought I'd ask. For those of you using anything
OTHER than dialup connections to the internet, what are the costs invloved
and is it worth it? Assuming my primary interest is online games (N3 and GPL
of course) and the occasional 100 meg download, is ISDN worth it? What about
(A)DSL or cable? I realize this is a gloabl newsgroup, but those of you on
the east cost of the US what types of fees are you seeing for cable and ISDN
services? What about equipment?
TIA.

Here in Ottawa, Canada, I would definitely recommend cable or DSL.  I've

$40 CDN ($27 US?) per month and I get a 10% discount (because I also a cable
TV through Rogers).  For the most part, I get great pings/latency in GPL and
N3.  Both DSL and cable use modems which is connected to a 10baseT Ethernet
NIC on your PC.  Some PCs (Compaq I think) have a built-in combo 56k/DLS
modem that let's you plug your phone line straight into your PC, but I'm not
sure how well this works and if it's compatible with the DSL service offered
here..

There is supposedly an additional $15 monthly cable modem rental fee that's
been waved since I signed up (I think if they start asking for this, a lot
of their subscribers might jump to ADSL, which is also about $40/mo).  They
supply a 10baseT NIC card with the installation that you keep.  The
installation is currently free, but has been anywhere from $50-150 depending
on the promotion).

I've been on MediaOne cable modem since May of this year.  It's
fantastic!  The difference between this connection and my old analog 56k
connection is like the difference between a model T Ford and an F-16 on
full afterburner.

Cost is $30 a month.  If I didn't already subscribe to MediaOne cable
TV, it would be somewhat more.  Also, I bought my cable modem at Circuit
City for $200.  This saved $50 off the normal $100 installation fee, and
cuts the monthly cost from $40 to $30, since I'm not renting a cable
modem from MediaOne.  I think Circuit City now has a promotion where you
get the installation for free.  MediaOne still does the installation;
you just give them a certificate that comes with the cable modem kit.

Also, I bought an extra Ethernet card and Sygate gateway software and
have several computers on my home LAN connected directly to the Internet
through the computer that's hooked to the cable modem.  It works great.

For racing online, and for the occasional 100 meg download, as well as
for surfing, emailing, and anything else you might want to do online, a
good, fast digital connection can't be beat!
