GPL conflict with internet connection

by Paul Jone » Mon, 11 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I bought GPL as a Christmas present for my brother in law and today I
tried to introduce him to the joys of VROC. Unfortunately when his is
connected to the internet his GPL hangs on the introscreen (the one with
the version number), and the only way out is to reboot. GPL starts up
and works fine if he isn't connected. He has a PII 333MHz, Voodoo2,
56Kbs internal fax modem, Windows 98, 64Mb memory....
If anyone has hit this problem and knows a way around it we would be
very grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

'Fraid I can't help but if you really like him you might just want to
leave it. You don't wanna see the "call costs" section of my connection
software. The money I've spent has gone off the scale since I tried VROC
for the first time :-)

Cheers!

Are you using the ore.ini file? (available from the vroc site) just
d/l it and place it in the GPL directory. Have you read all the vroc
FAQ's, and have you allowed Alison security clearance? (when you do
the VROC set-up netscape asks you to allow Alison security access in
one of the set-up screens, just say yes or GPL will not work with
VROC)

Yes I dled core.ini and gave Alison all the priviliges she requested.
Actually the problem seems to be to do with GPL and internet access not
with VROC. We can use GPL stand and it works fine. You just need an
internet connection of any description and it won't go past the title
screen.

Hmmm.  That's really odd.

Have him edit the file named app.ini in GPL's home directory (c:\sierra\gpl
by default) with Notepad, and change the 0 to a 1 on the line that has
"disableDirectConnect" on it.  Maybe when GPL queries the system about
serial ports, it's screwing up the internal modem.

If that doesn't help, have him create a file named core.ini, using Notepad,
in GPL's home directory, and put the following two lines in it.
[Communications]
disable_ipx=1
Maybe IPX is somehow only partially set up, and the system gets funky when
we look for IPX addresses.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe when GPL looks for modems
on the system, it takes a long time for the system to timeout the search
because the modem is already connected.  Have him wait a full two minutes
at GPL's opening screen before trying to reboot.

Randy,

I used to have a problem like this with GPL in offline mode.  When
starting GPL and not connected to the net, the game would poll my ISDN
adapter for *exactly* 40 seconds - I would see lights flashing on it.
If I was already connected, no problem, it would start up immediately.

Now that I have an ADSL connection, it's a non-issue.
