If anyone cares, there's a groovy trick you can pull in GT3 to poke a
hole in its driving model.

If you've got the cash, or fancy completing all Rally Licence stages
on gold, get a Escudo Pikes Peak Edition. Its a bit of a beast, and
can be upgraded to around 1800bhp, tops of about 430kph.

Take it to the test circuit, and edit the settings:

lower ground clearance and springs setup to lowest
set suspension bound to the highest
set suspension rebound to lowest
0 camber
+2 FF and -2 FR toe
turn off all leccy driving aids (VCD, etc)
put maximum downforce on rear, none on front
set gear ratios as wide as they'll go

now get on the circuit, turn around and start powering along. you'll
hit around 350 on the first long corner - keep the exit speed up and
then just tear along the long straight. when you hit about 400, the
nose begins to rise.. 450 and the car slides up to riding on its back
wheels, completely perpendicular to the road surface. and then the
speedo goes through the roof, and the car launches itself forward to
over 1400kph...!

bruuuum!!

although totally impractical for race conditions.

I definatly agree with you, the AI is on rails. The AI makes no changes to
there path, even if there is a car in the way.

Yeah now your talking, finally someone agrees with me, that Nascar is
Redneck racing. I too am from the USA. I'm definatly not a Nascar fan. I
can't see how anyone stays awake during those races. I've tried to watch
them, and they put me to sleep faster than sleeping pills (this is watching
on TV of course, I think it would be hard to fall asleep at the actual
race).

Is the AI any better in GT3 than it is in GT2?  I found the best way to win
many of the races, was to run the first lap at 2/3 speed, because the other
cars did too, then floor it on the last lap.  It was strange the other cars AI
was tied to how fast the player went.

I hate to break it to you, but the physics in GT3 are not that good. I have
both, GT3 feels great at first, but all the cars pretty much feel the same,
even the rally cars have the same feeling as road cars. As far as upgrading
the cars, thats kind of silly, because I end up buying all the same parts
for all the cars I buy. so it's somewhat pointless. I enjoy the game, but I
doubt I will be playing it still in 6 months.

Ok, I'll make you feel better. GT3 is not that good. Feel better. If you
have a PS2, it's a must have. But I don't think it's worth buying a PS2 for.
There are so few "quality" racing games on the PS2 to make it worth the
money.
It's kind of funny actually, if GT3 came out on PC, RAS would be calling it
crap. I have no doubt of that. There would be alot of GT3 talk for about a
month, then the subjects would switch back to GPL.

I wonder; how many here play with nothing but racers?

I don't think so.  I think it'd go in the Porsche Unleashed drawer.

probably, yeah. :)

Hey,

That sounds like a bug in Burnout when it was first released. It's turning
the downforce into thrust.

>Actually IMHO, I think that SCGT is by far the closest thing on the PC to
>GT3.

I disagree. What makes GT3 so ***ive isn't just the driving model
(good as it is) but the rewards for racing. You earn cash which can by
used to purchase 100+ cars and thousands of upgrade parts. The closest
in terms of gameplay on the PC is NFS Porsche Unleashed.

>Quick question to those who have played it - are you married?

I am,. but I work in the *** industry. So it's easier to get
justify.

My wife is also a pretty amazing lady I must say. Picked up and moved
the whole family without a second thought when I got offered the game
design gig here in Vancouver, because she knew how much I'd love it.
And yes, I do know how lucky I am.  ;-)

Afraid not, but I do see some "human-like" behavior such as going off
into the grass and spinouts by the AI drivers.

You win cash in SCGT to do the same thing.
