You certainly should be able to stop shorter un-locked !!!
Are you sure you really are braking as well as possible un-locked up. I find
braking gently at first followed by steadily increasing pressure gives
maximum retardation. It's certainly better than locking up - especially if
I'm braking round a bend - eg. that left hander at Rouen before the
hairpin - what a *** that is !

Yes, of course of a curve I cannot lock the brakes, this doesn't help at
all.

But in a situation like Parabolica or most first corners which have a long
straight behind them. If you try to balance it on the fine line of heavy
braking and locking you will be very slow to slow down. Another bit harder
and the back goes out.

If you just stomp on the brakes the back end hasn't time to snap out from
behind stand the front hold it steady which itself is unrealistic I feel.

Have you ever locked up your brakes on ice?  If you were going perfectly
straight, the car will SLIDE straight.  GPL sounds realistic to *me*...<g>

Perhaps but you know GPL man, your never going perfectly straight, the damn
thing shakes all over the place.

Anway the main point was the braking distance, this is weird to me.

I drive on snow and ice 5 months a year, and while if I lock the
brakes, the car is having a straight line of motion, but turns to one
of the sides due to uneven brake pressure. :)

If you were to lose 30% of the deceleration, you would skid
(1 divided by 0.7) times as far       ...  or 43% farther.

(This is why trajectory analysts don't get repeat invites to parties! ;)

Matt, bring the latest version of your new sim and you would be welcome
at my party. ;-)

I discovered this, too, but I try to avoid capitalizing on it.  I will
resort to it in those "oh shit" situations where I have had a massive
brain-fade and missed my brake points horribly. <g>

I've also found that, if not going too fast, I lose the tail of the
car entering a corner, I can hammer the brakes and stop the spin.  I
lose time, but not wheels, etc.

None of this is good technique, but I do consider them to be useful
survival skills... <g>

Thanks, Matt.
That's why I don't work for Boeing or everything would fly off the
