For sure, they used to call this way Arnoux in his last season, when
he was driving a Ligier (if I'm right). But I think it was used for
many pilots :-)

: : And I always thought the "Mickey Mouse" chicane was a modern invention,
: : which reached its zenith with the infamous pile o'tires seen at Barcelona
: : following Senna's death.

: reminds me of something james hunt said once, during commentating on a
: gp.  he called someone (who i guess was notorious for not letting
: people lap him) a 'mobile chicane'.   anyone know who he was talking about?

: also, just to make things easier, may not have been james hunt who
: said it :-)

It's certainly been said many many times on UK commentary over the
past few years.  Particularly of anyone driving a Minardi.  Couldn't
help you with who first said it though.

I think on http://members.home.net/f1gallery there is a funny sound clip
of Murray Walker going mad when Arnoux took Berger out of the lead at
Adelaide 1988 :-)

No.....the saying has been around much longer than 5 years.   I recall
hearing this term back in the 1980s, at least.

So to summarise:

you would like to which unknown personality was talking about an unknown
driver at a race you don't know in a year you can't remember?

:)

Seriously, the saying has been around as long as I remember and has been
used to describe everyone from Gianni Lavaggi to Damon Hill.

I have a vague memory of  Wattie on Eurosport using the expression regarding
Olivier Grouillard.

Believe I heard it the first time on the (?) 83 F1 review video, with the
Brilliant aussie Clive James commenting fom Imola.

With Clive James doing the commentary it would have to be '82, '84 or
'86. I haven't watched any of those vids for a while but I'd guess it's
the 1982 one and he's referring to the Toleman.

"The Toleman - a mobile chicane with the power to weight ratio of the
Barbican arts centre"

"The Toleman - a car for David Coleman"

etc...

Hehe, come to think of it, another brilliant Clive James quote from the Brands race
of ....errm, 85? 82? When two drivers fighting for the lead come up to lap Andrea De
Cesaris....
"Some said it was a case of two brains against one, some said the odds were even
greater".

He also referred to De Cesaris as an "incurable featherhead". <g>

Aw, I miss his comments, F1 certainly was a bit less uptight in those days...
