F1RS slideshow -- help!

by VABergfe » Mon, 27 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I finally broke down and bought F1RS. Performance is fine in training, but when
I go to a single race, even with all the graphics turned down (including
replay), I get 2-3 fps at the start making it totally undriveable!  I have a
P166 with 32 meg, voodoo1(2.43 drivers), STB lightspeed 128.  Any ideas?

As long as I'm here, is there a way to reduce the dead zone in the steering?  I
get a lot of play and then an over reaction.  I'd prefer more sensitivity right
up front.

Finally, I did the 67 meg install and MY GAWD thos menus take forever to load!
How big is the big install and how much does it speed up the menus?

Thanks!

Are you sure you are using your 3dfx? It may not be real fast, but
it shouldn't be a slide show either. Also try turning off the replays
and reduce the number of opponants.

I've never messed with that.

My full install is 204MB.

Yeah, I get the logo and all that.  The start is maybe even worse than it was
in the demo,but there could be more cars.  I hate to turn down the # of cars,
but guess I will.  There's a P2 350 Voodoo2 on the not too distant horizon, so
maybe I'll just train in the mean time.  The thing that seems odd is that for
once I have the "recommended" system instead of the "minimum" and it still
sucks.  Sighhhh.

Is this separate from the 1.0.9 patch?  I applied 1.0.9 and my exe file DATE
changed, but in checking properties of the exe file it still shows 1.0.0.  Any
ideas?

Hmmm. Well the PII should help. But I just have a P5-200MMX and
a Voodoo 1 card. The game kicks ass. But then again the performance
of a P5-200MMX Vs a P5-166 is pretty huge.

There are two .EXE files, one is the 3dfx version and one is the d3d
version. Make sure you are running the f1rsvoo.exe file.

I don't think so. I have a AMD K6 200 and it really kicks ass !!

Maybe the following words may improve the performance on your machine:

===
Tip Of The Day: lower the sound of the other cars!
Until yesterday it didn't know this was possible, although I visit this forum
frequently. A question (ans an answer, thank you!) on this forum led me in the
right direction, so I thought; let's share it with my fellow racers!
The sound of the other cars was the reason I had a hard time getting through
the first corners (I found out it wasn't due to the well known slight
framerate drop at the first corner 'problem' (come to think of it: isn't that
framerate drop also solved with this tip?!?! I'll try and see later on today!).

More than once I drove too slow and lost a lot of places because of this, and
also more than once I slipped out of a corner when other cars were around me
(also later on in the race) because I was accelerating too much. On top of
that I always felt irritated and pushed by hearing cars coming up behind me,
as if the we're going to overtake me, while in (sim)reality they we're still
1.6 sec. away!

Well, here's how it goes.
In the F1RS\CPA\dll directory you'll find a file called Snd_cpa.ini.
You've got to change the following parameters:
SXD_DIST_SATUR=5
SXD_DIST_FADE=75
The SXD_DIST_FADE option is the most important: this one determines the
distance
at which another car can he heard (or to be more precise: at which distance
the other car's sound will fade in or out). The default setting is way too
high: when you're on pole position, a number of 75 will let you hear all cars
around, up to the one at the back of the grid (it seems)! No wonder you can't
hear your own engine anymore. (And maybe, as I said before, the computer has
a hard time producing the sound of 22 cars, hence the framerate drop at the
beginning of the race?) Two cars in your neighbourhood is enough to make it
impossible to hear your own engine. Lowering this to a very low number will
do the trick, but then you may not be able to hear a car coming up behind you
until he's beside you.
SXD_DIST_SATUR seems to change the overall volume of the other cars. But
lowering this from 5 to 1 isn't enough. Especially if you don't alter the
FADE setting: being able to hear all 22 car engines will still make you deaf.

I found out (after a lot or restarting and quitting) the following setting
work great on my computer:
SXD_DIST_SATUR=1
SXD_DIST_FADE=15
Now I can hear my own engine at all times. At the start it's still noisy around

you, but that's realistic. And when a car comes up behind you during the race,
you can hear it in time to be able to cut him off (or let him pass, if you're
very polite). I did some testing and found out that my average grading after a
few corners in a race is higher now, than with the default setting! Just fiddle

around a bit with these numbers, and you'll see your performance will get
better. And you're fun with this great game will increase!

======

Good luck !

Also, man mailt sich...

Thanks for the input.  I dunno, maybe it's an MMX thing (mine is plain
vanilla).  Until I get the new machine, I'm turning the # of cars down to 10 or
12.  That works.  I don't have room for a full install and the slow menus are
driving me nuts anyway, so I may just put the whole thing on hold a couple of
weeks.
