N2 3dfx- Richmond Bug ?

by The Deatherage' » Tue, 02 Jun 1998 04:00:00

In anticipation of the upcoming race at Richmond, I ran a quick race at
Richmond, tonight  running 3dfx for the first time there.

I thought the wall textures looked strange....You could not really read
anything on the  wall ....therefore after my race,  I got to looking at the
wall textures words (which I thought looked Backwards ( i.e. you could not
read anything except the orange Unical ( sp?) ball was in the first letter
of the logo and not the last ! )

To check myself, I ran the regular version of N2 and all of the wall
textures cleared up ! ! ! It is easy to read the textures !

What's going on here ?

Does the patch get confused and reverse textures ?

Happens to me too.  I think whoever did the patch got carried away
with their bilinear filtering.  That's the "smearing" that a 3d
card does with textures, to blend them, but if it's done too much,
it just washes things out.  Hence, "Richmond International Speedway"
becomes an incomprehensible blob of black.

With the N2 3dfx patch, some tracks have this problem, others don't.
Sometimes it gets better the longer you race.

I am curious about this also. I ran the 3dfx version at C***te and
the walls were unreadable. Went back to the standard version and it
cleared up. I have a monster 3d and Matrox Millenium 4 mb card and the
game runs fine in standard mode.  I didn't notice any great improvement
with the 3dfx.

It's a known problem with the 3Dfx patch, and has been a known problem
since it's release. The two horizontal lines traversing the width of the
screen (not mentioned in the quoted article) is also a known problem.

But you can solve it using some of the env variables. It's described in
the readme file (Antialiasing, filtering).
