N2 at the Glen [help needed]

by Varmint2 » Sat, 03 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I've been trying to run N2 at Watkins Glen. I've been practicing, and I'm
trying to race now. My biggist problem is getting thru the first lap witout
hitting anyone. I can't seem to brake as well as the other cars. If I start
from the poll, I run away. If I start from the back, I can wait till things
thin out but It's hard to get back some positions. when I start mid pack it's
fun for the fans in turn one <g>

I need to know how to get my car braking better, so I don't bounce off the
cars in front of me.

          Help,          Dave

Dave,

Where are you braking for T1?  If it is a standing start, the
polesitter will probably brake somewhere after the 300, maybe
as late as the 200.  The problem is that you have no idea when
the people in front of you are going to brake.  If you are braking
after the 600 marker into T1 on hotlaps, then your brakes are
fine and you (and probably those around you in the pack) need
more online practice.

I consider myself decent at the glen, but many times I get taken
out in T1 by someone else's braking habits.  They either brake too
early at the start and I hit them, or I get run over from behind.  Of
course, maybe I'm braking too early as well.

Hmm.  I guess the answer is practice.  And race against people
with higher skill levels. :)

DOWNSHIFT!!!!!!!!   You can keep traction while slowing down quicker than
braking alone.

Perhaps, but make sure your revs are low enough and your wheels are
straight or you may transfer too much weight to the front of the car
and spin.  I prefer using the brakes to slow down and downshift as the
revs fall to be in the proper gear to begin accelerating.

I don't think you should rely on the motor in this way, but if it
works for you, go for it!

I too use downshifting to help me slow down, but of course watching the
RPM.  I blew a few motors by downshifting early :(.  On turn one, I
recently found that downshifting to 1st helped me stay inside and exit
faster, and I have not missed that turn since.

How high do you have your first gear set?  I find that T1 is a second
gear corner for me, which I take in the 70-75 mph range, with maybe
the right front tire on the curbing..

Anyone want to trade a decent Glen setup ( > 120mph) for a competitive
setup for Richmond? :)

Unfortunately, I am not able to break that 120mph lap yet.  I use 9.80/9.70
for the first gear, which is a stretch for going over 70mph, so I might be
a tad slow on 1st but found it very useful for passing there.

Have you tried in the options menu, Braking help? They offer automatic
shifting, & Braking help. Try this & let me know how you do.
