F1RS installation problem

F1RS installation problem

by Jeff Antle » Fri, 09 Jan 1998 04:00:00

Help!

I thought I was going to get away from CPR tonight -- but the copy
of F1RS sitting on my doorstep won't install!

It begins transferring files, gets to about 20%, then says

        Can't copy G:\f1datab\Resson\concretdom.wav to
        d:\Ubisoft\F1rs\f1datab\Resson\concretdom.wav

Then it uninstalls what it's done and exits.  Aargh!

It's not a space issue, I've tried several drives, it always hangs
at this one file.  Any ideas?

Whoever said it was the DOS cd-rom drivers hit it square on the head.

Next problem: after I reinstalled WIN95 recently, my machine wouldn't
recognize the cd-rom drive without MSCDEX and IBMIDECD.SYS in the
autoexec.bat and config.sys files (respectively).  I tried
"install new hardware" but it doesn't set up properly.

Ugh.  Now what?

Jeff.....
There is an explanation for this message from Ubi Soft, which they
provided as a mail-out after New Year.

We have a dedicated F1RS news server at the following address:-
cbr.cls.com.au
The NG name is:-
alt.games.f1rs.

You will find a copy of Ubi Softs' answers in a thread called 'Answers
from Ubisoft, which also provides a lot of additional info.

There is also a dedicated F1RS FTP server that we've set up.
Address is:- ftp://cbr.cls.com.au/f1rs

There are several file containing info, patches are there (Ubi Soft's)
and some new WAV files.

You are welcome to visit.

Thank you thank you thank you...for all of my love of this sim I too
have had installation problems. It doesnt recognise my Voodoo w/ref 2.43
drivers and Direct X 5.0 and latest Direct Ref Voodoo drivers. Says I
dont have any voodoo. I found a way around by installing the full D3d
version but still feel like its broken cause I dont see any intro
AVI's...

This very well may be a DOS CD driver issue (can't handle long filenames).
Try deleting all references to CD drivers in your autoexec.bat and config.sys
then let Windoze(r) handle it for you.

Good luck,
Bill

i had this problem too - i added some more HD"s to my PC and don't have
room left for my CDROM on the motherboard ide chains any more so i
had just put it on my Soundblaster IDE thingy, and the soundblaster
dos driver for it doesn't seem to support long filenames. Win95 won't
see the CDROM without those dos drivers there.
my solution to installing F1RS was to copy the entire CD over to
HD, and run the installer from the HD copy. the installer still
will copy the files from your CD however. BUT there is a file in your
HD copy of the CD located at \instdata\ubi.ins that contains all the
file
names to copy. so each time the Installer threw a tantrum about a
missing
file name, i'd go find that filename in this ubi.ins file (which is
just a text file) and rename the long filename to the short filename and
try again. it turns out there are 3 long filenames you'll have to alter.
once the install is complete, go into the F1RS install and rename those
three files back to their long filenames - which you will have made a
note
of as you were changing each.
i hope this works for you:) and i hope i explained it properly! let me
know if you need more details.

This is something peculiar to the Orchid Righteous. In order for the game
installation to recognize your voodoo card you need the old v.2 glide.dll
and sst1init.dll files to be present in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, as well
as the v.2.43. (Don't ask why, French programmers eh...not content with
chain smoking Gitanes and trying to get off with your wife).  You can find
them on your CD that came with the card in the Win95 directory listed as

glide.dl_
 sst1init.dl_

Just copy them to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and rename them glide.dll and
sst1init.dll. If you haven't got this file or can't find it ( I think its on
Ubisoft's website) I can e-mail it to you (about 130Kb).
