Computer upgrade questions :)

by Luke Phillip » Mon, 20 Jan 2003 02:37:21

Ok, instead of using a friend GF4 MX400 on my current ***specs, im going
to do a complete upgrade around the end of the month. Im going to go for a
P4 2.4. The only question i have is regrading the video cards for this
system. Currently, as i said in the other post below, i have a celeron 850,
64mb GF2 mx400. Is this video card going to be a serious bottleneck for the
system. Ive been wanting to upgrade to a 9700 pro but im waiting for the
price to drop down a bit. Would i be better off not waiting and going for a
ti4200 instead or sitting around for a bit and getting the 9700.. just dont
know how bad the GF2 will be on the system.

Grggllllll!!!  That's your cpu *** on the video card. ;0)

Don't torture the cpu with that card.  If you can't swing the 9700 Pro there
are 2 nice cards for under $200.  Either a GF4 Ti 4200 that can reliably
overclock (to near 4400 or even 4600 specs) or a 9500 Pro which will give Ti
4400 performance with BETTER FSAA capability and DX9 for the future.

Either choice is below $200 US and will do wonders for your new cpu.

It depends what you want to do with it. I'm running GPL with GF2MX on
P4 1.8 overclocked to 2.7 just fine. But I'm not a 3DPowerUser.

In any case you can postpone video card upgrade and see for yourself
how it will run. You can always upgrade video card separately.

Luke, it will cost you absolutely no extra money to try it in the new system, if it isn't making the
game syou want playable enough until the price drops on the card you want, you can upgrade then.

The GF2 will be a bottleneck so you probably won't even notice much of
increase from your current set up. Best price to performance is still GF
4200 but even that will still be a bottleneck for a 2.4. All depends on what
you want to play really and how much you're prepared to pay to make things
look nice.

OK, everyone is right here about the bottleneck but........

RAM, GF2TI64mb to Athlon 2100+, Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo and 512Mb
PC2100DDRRam.

My 3DMark2001SE scores went from 2700 to 4800.  OK, this isn't
lightning fast, but now I get 36fps permanently (even at race start)
in 1280x1074 resn, and nothing less than that on F12002.  I've not got
a DSL line yet so I don't have GT2002 so I can't post about framerates
on that.

I know that the GF2Ti is the bottleneck, but hell it doesn't matter at
the moment.  When I upgrade in 12 months time (i spend about 200 -
250 as an annual ug cycle) I'll remove the bottleneck from the GF2
and change it to the CPU / RAM.

Now, what might be more sensible to suggest to the original poster
would be to ditch the P4 2.4 and get a more balanced system.  As far
as I'm concerned, though, having a bottleneck which actually doesn't
create any problems with *** means I'm getting the most out of my
VGA card, and there is some spare in the CPU which I'll get the
benefit of further down the line.

Just my tuppence, anyway!

Matt

Is there any reason you dont have GTR 2002 other than the lack of DSL
line..?

The weekend of the GTR 2002 release i made an offer two or three times to
all UK residents of a copy.....perhaps you missed it..? The offer was taken
up by 17 individuals and they are all ***s to this day :)

Offer still stands...no good reason to be without this jewel :)
