Question concerning upgrade of computer

by RWF0 » Tue, 06 May 1997 04:00:00

My racin buddy and I run 486's and are fixing to upgrade.  What better
place to get suggestions!   Please make suggestions as you see fit.  Our
goal is to be able to run nas2 in rendition mode via modem to each others
house in our own little series.  Neither of us can afford Hawaii on a
regular basis. (bummer)  And the upcoming NRO is way out of the limit.  So
we'll stick to racin each other and/or other local racers.
Anyhow--
Budget: approx.  $500 each (the lower the better)
Desire: 166 pentium  (would a 166mmx be better?)
currently I have a 14.4 modem  (would like 33.6+)
he has 33.6 US Robotics  should be ok on his end
my current video is Stealth64 LB 2meg
his Cirrus Logic 2meg LB (i think)
Both thinking of Stealth Monster3D (Can get local $150 or so) is this a
good choice?
We both have 16 meg ram. Would 32 help or not?
I'm not 100% positive but I suspect we will have to upgrade mother board
too? If so what's a very good one to look for. cache size?

Using Win95, but out of the question for modem at this point. pretty
terrible just racing singular against 24 cars only graphics on are lines.
Works somewhat better in Dos mode.  I would imagine we both have screwed
up properties and shortcuts as bad as it runs.

Oh well enough rambling-- Any help appreciated!!

P133 ~$300  (or P150 for a few $ more and overclock to P166)
Rendition ~$170
33.6 Modem ~$70
32 meg ram ~$160

Total ~$700

You'll want a steering wheel if ya don't have one.

Unless Papy makes a voodoo port the Monster 3d won't help Nascar but other
than that it's a great card better overall than the Rendition.

On the above system Nascar works great through win '95.
