Dave Kaemmer interview on High Gear

Today we have posted F1Filter's world-exclusive interview with Dave Kaemmer,
creator of Grand Prix Legends, NASCAR Racing 4, etc. They talk about the
development of NASCAR Racing 4, physics in racing sims, Grand Prix Legends
and...oh...race accidents. Always interesting...Anyway, here's the
obligatory quote. Of course, it doesn't help you much, but that's because
you need to check out the interview yourself:

"The Godfather of Auto Racing Simulations", as Steve Smith calls him in the
GPL Strategy Guide. This was the first thing that popped into my mind as I
was following David behind the display booths, trying to find a quiet
situation where this interview could be conducted. It's easy to be
overwhelmed by the fact that you are about to interview someone that is so
highly regarded in the sim racing community. But at that time, my mind was
inundated with literally hundreds of questions that I could ask him. My
decision was to touch on as many topics as time would allow. Since the N4
project has a bit of development to go, I decided that any specific
questions about this upcoming sim (i.e. aerodynamic advantages of a
particular car) would have to wait until a later date; as Dave has already
agreed to do another interview when N4 nears it's completion."

Make sure to especially check out the last couple of pages, but of course
the complete interview is really worth reading as well. 9-pages chockful of
info.

*Great* read! Can't wait for N4. No, actually I can't wait for the N4 hack
that lets us drive on the GPL tracks... at the same time as the GPL cars
(I don't ask for much <g> :-)

<sound of flesh splitting to make way for ear to ear grin>

Aww, now look what you've gone and done. I was just settling back into a
nice, comfortable flightsim-inspired melancholy about the future. But now
I've got all optimistic again. Damn you, damn Kaemmer, and damn Papyrus!
<vbg>

Andrew "more grin than a clown convention" McP

PS I've been wondering about the philosophical validity of the statement:
"Kaemmer is the GPL of sim designers". I've a feeling it might contravene
several laws of metaphysics, but I'm dying to use it.

An absolutely entertaining read.  I think I see a Cart Legends in our
future.... :-p

Thanks for the link.

My favorite part of the interview:

F1F: Well how about Papy doing some other type of Formula 1 project?

DK: I can't really comment on that. [smiles]

    F1F: Oh!!! OK

Hmmmmmm...

Personally I'm hoping that they do a modern Cart sim instead.

Same here.  But judging by some of the comments made, this is what I'm
picking up from it.  Hell, I'll take either one, far as that goes. ;-)

Wow, thanks a lot - that's one of the most interesting interviews I've
ever read on the web. Great job, you really asked all the right
questions!

A little tip to the Interviewer. You have to think on your feet man. DK was
about to comment on what I think could be the most important topic in
simulator programming and you let him change the subject. For years Ive been
hoping for someone like DK to make a race sim with the adaptability of
Quake, just a basic engine that could be manipulated to make whatever race
type desired. I really would like to have heard DK's thoughts on it too.

<snip from interview>

DK: It would help a lot. If you look at the GPL community. Reverse
engineering the track format. Building tracks, and shipping new***pit
artwork, sounds, and everything else. I think that's important. I think that
would be a direction that I would very much like to go. Making it so that,
uh, people would really be able to get in and do more with the elements of
the sim. But, uh. I didn't see that as your question really.

F1F: No, that's basically it. It's an open ended question. You can tackle it
however you want.

(This is where I would have said "I dont give a shit about the last question
tell me everything you can about this direction that you would very much
like to go")

DK: [visibly intrigued] No really. Your other question about 'what would it
take'. I mean. Is it really the case with the flight simulator market that
people can rate a game on a scale from 1 to 10. '10' being something that
the military would use to train pilots. And '1' is, you know..

(Again "I dont give a shit about the last question tell me everything you
can about this direction that you would very much like to go")

Dave Kaemmer interview on High Gear

by news » Mon, 26 Jun 2000 04:00:00

The main question I wanted an answer to is WHERE IS THE RS SHIFTER SUPPORT
FOR GPL?  Kaemmer claims that he thinks GPL may well ultimately be his
favorite sim.  I just think that when something is a labor of love that GPL
was, it wouldn't kill them to give us the ability to use the same H-Pattern
shifter.  Heck even the ability to go directly from 5th to 1st or Reverse
after spinning out would be worth it alone!  The ability to drop 2 gears
under braking without having to work down through them would also be huge.

Kenneth didn't touch this AT ALL, so alas we still have NO idea why Papy has
not done its fanatic followers the small favor of getting us Shifter
support.  If it's a difficult thing to do, then just say so, Dave!  At least
then we'd know what's going on.
