N4 Lockups. Please help!

by Jon Thompso » Wed, 18 Apr 2001 02:09:35

I am having constant lockups almost every time I play.  It only seems to
happen during replays or while editing the Driver Info (while the car
spins)... I'm thinking it might be a memory problem? I have plenty of RAM,
but could it be somewhere in my core memory settings? I have completely
wiped out and reinstalled N4, and it still happens. Here are my slow system
specs:

Pentium II 333
160 MB RAM
Diamond Viper II Video Card

I have nothing running in the background when I play. Any ideas? Thanks.

While at the track hit your "F" key which will display your frames per
second (FPS)

That number ideally should stay 30 or above for smooth performance.  If not
you need more horsepower from your CPU and video board.

You can also decrease the graphic details to bring that number up.

This happens even while i'm in testing, by myself, with about 50 frames a
second.  I also have most graphics turned down.

N4 Lockups. Please help!

Just a friendly observation, but 160MB RAM isn't plenty any more, especially
if you run Windows. My 2 servers for N4 each have 1,024MB (1 Gig) RAM and
still have some issues. I think your main problem is your CPU. Pentium II
just isn't enough horsepower for this game. I wouldn't run it on anything
less than a PIII 700. Also, you need fast hard drives (ATA66-100) and you
also really need a 64meg video card. All my computers have 32 meg video
cards and trodge along, looking to upgrade my video card to 64 or 128 meg
card in my personal racing machine, servers don't require any fancy cards.
Hope all this helps, if enough to say ignore the minimum req's on the box.

Hi Jon,

I would suspect the Viper II video card.  Check the readme file about
compatible video cards.  You could try DirectX and OpenGL to see if
either one of those work.

Jason.

Seems to me that while those are pretty close to the minimum specs required
to run N4 that it will probably not be adequate and is probably the problem.
I know thats probably not what you want to hear but that would be my best
uneducated guess.

I know my computer is horrible for this game, but I know it's powerful
enough to run one single car testing with most graphics turned off.  I never
had a problem untill recently.

I was having similar problems this weekend when I moved to a new hard drive,
freshly installing windows. I installed a memory cache handling program,
cacheman is really good(http://www.outertech.com) and it seems to have
solved the problem. Try it and let us know if it helps or not.
