Forget about Automatic detail. It is true, that it does not adjust the
graphics detail on the fly, but here is what I've found out yesterday:
set your graphics to manual, and set all the graphic options until you get
a decent projected frame rate (18-20 fps). When you're done with that,
ADJUST THE TARGET FRAME RATE TO SOMETHING 2.0 LOWER THAN THE ABOVE VALUE,
in this case, 16-18 fps. Voila, you'll have fairly smooth graphics and
a playable, responsive game!
I have no idea how the projected vs. target frame rate works exactly, and
I have no idea why it changes the behaviour of the game engine with the above
mentioned trick, but it sure did work for me. Try it out and please send me
an email about your results (eg. processor occupancy on various circuits).
