GPL stops with Exception 0E at 0028:C000A4B0 in VXD VMM(01) + 000094B0

Hello,

Since upgrading my old K6-2 500 system to an A7V133 with 1.2GHz Athlon C, I
have been getting the above exception (always at exactly the same offset )
in GPL. It occurs occasionally, but seems more frequent while racing online.
Other programs like 3DMark 2000/2001, Sandra, etc. all seem to run fine for
days, and the only blue screens I've seen are in GPL.

The new system shares pretty much all its components from the old system,
bar the motherboard, CPU, fan and PCI modem, and so I'm struggling to find
out what the cause is. I've also resurrected the old system, and it works
faultlessly (but slowly!).

I've tried going from the original 1003 BIOS to 1004 and then 1005A Final,
but this hasn't helped. I've also tried using DMA on and off (on the IDE
controllers), using and not using the VIA busmaster drivers, using the
Promise controller, underclocking the FSB and CPU, setting the BIOS to safer
settings, shuffling the PCI cards around,  reserving IRQ's for them, turning
off unused hardware (COM ports and USB) to free some IRQ's. I've also tried
reinstalling the software in case it was corrupt, but I fear the problem may
be somewhere in the O/S.

If anyone could offer some advice, even if only to say what the error might
mean and roughly where (driver, kernel, hardware, etc.), I'd be most
grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.

P.S.  The specs are:-

ASUS A7V133 Rev. 1.05
1.2GHz Athlon C
256Mb PC133 CAS3
Voodoo5 5500 PCI
ELSA 56k PCI HCF Modem

Fujitsu 10.4Gb ATA33 (slave)
Freecom CD R/RW 2x2x24 IDE
Windows 98SE
Office 2000
Adaptec DirectCD
VIA 4-in-4 4.27V
USB filter v1.08
Other drivers from supplied CD

How much free space available for swap space?  Defragged?

That error deals with the video card.  Try setting back to a Standard VGA, then
deleting EVERY reference to the Voodoo(including in the registry if you're
comfortable with that).  Then, re-install the Voodoo drivers...
Good luck.

Have you done the manual install of the hidden VXD's ?

I'm talking about ntkern and the like, to check if it needs to be done,
right-click my computer/properties/

And check for example the Kboard's pilot properties, if you see anything in
parenthesis than you know you have some tweaking to do...

I don't know why MS never fixed that?

They're in the .cabs but not extracted on any install or SP.

I think that Sisoft Sandra fixes that for you or some similar
applicationfixes that for you.

Search for the subject in any good online help facility and they'll tell you
how to do it.

Wherabouts am I meant to be looking "for things in brackets"? I've looked in
System Properties | Device Manager and selected the properties of various
devices, but I don't know what I'm looking for (the only things I can see in
brackets are (Standard keyboards), etc.)

Could you please give me some clues about what to look for?

Thanks,

Andrew.

If you look at your Kboard driver properties and you find something looking
like :

VDD.VXD [NTKERN.VXD] instead of just ntkern.vxd whithout the brackets then
your it...

The Virtual Device Driver is generic (common) to a lot of peripherals
Kboard, Modem, Mouse (I think) etc. it is known to cause problems as opposed
to having a more stable system running with specific device drivers.

Like I said, it's known, the cure is built-in the OS and yet not installed
for whatever reason it may be...I never got to take the time to try to get
an "official" answer from MS.

I think this one may be a myth, like "optimum swapfile = 2.5 x RAM".
See:
http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html
Plenty of info, M$ Knowledge Base refs. and things to try here,
anyway.
