        Expected VXD version V1.4, got V1.2

The titlebar for the dialog box simply reads "Error".  How freakin
informative...

Anybody got a hint for me as to how to go about fixing this?

Never mind, I found the problem - I had to reinstall the newest drivers.  
Everything is back to abnormal.
