So I download the game with much anticipation, having waited for what
seems like nearly a year since Codemasters announced version 3.

What a disappointment!  The car rotates around the middle of the
chassis.  Totally unnatural.  And, it takes forever for the game to
recognize the controllers inputs.  I tried with both my Momo force
wheel and my trusty joystick.  Once the car is in a slide, it takes at
least a second (sometimes longer) to respond to opposite lock.

Didn't they beta test this?

CMR2 is a much better driving sim.

So much for the wait.

Is this the demo you're on about ? Or did you seriously download 3 CD's
worth of ***without reading a few of the "glowing" reports in here ?
The demo has a patch. I don't think it improved the game much, though.

You've probably got one of the 'broken' ilegal copies. Codemasters software
degrades when it is copied making it very difficult to play.

Try buying a copy from somewhere that has a 'no quibble' returns policy.

Andi.

Yea, I read the reports first then dl'd it.  I'm not about to pay for
something like this without trying it first.  Maybe I should try the
demo version too.

As to the other poster... Never heard of "degrading bootlegged
software".  Usually, it either works or it doesn't.  Sounds like
marketing BS to me.

I've never heard of 'degrading" software.  I've also never heard of
any store allowing returning opened software.

You may be right.  I just finished going back and playing it before I
removed the game.  It crashed.  I rebooted and it didn't play more
than 30 seconds and crashed again.  I did a cold boot and it crashed
again.  Never seen anything like that.

It's gone.  Guess I'll try the demo.

Based on the patched demo, the game is a typical arcade console port
i.e. poor quality in most every respect.

I'd give those stages a bit of credit though at least.. the length isn't
great, but I have a feeling the rally sim community are going to whine about
stage lengths for years. Anyways, that UK stage in the demo is definately a
nice stage in my opinion...

I have the xbox version, and all the stages are very good despite
their length.  Rallisport challenge was fun but tended to have stages
that were a bit more realistic with long fast bits scattered
throughout...CMR3 seems to take the short length into consideration,
and presents you with varied terrain and difficult twisty roads to
compensate.  It's still an arcade game, but a damn fine one (altho I
prefer V-Rally 3).

Nah, he's probably referring to old rips, where in the interest of saving
all the bandwidth possible (when few had broadband) they did cut/compress a
lot of graphics/audio/movies and whatnot.

These days...it's all full-on ISOs and bin/cue images.  Zero degradation in
quality.

Nope, he's actually referring to a codemasters anti piracy thing... I'll try
to explain it because I remember reading about it one time.

If the game finds out it is pirated, it won't just say "insert CD" over and
over or something like that. It -will- let you play, but the game will get
worse and worse somehow. I don't know exactly how, but I'm guessing textures
mess up, stuff does weird things, options disappear, game crashes.. etc.

I found it to be totally stupid.. The game has been pirated, I don't know if
it's been implemented in CMR3 or not, but I can guarantee the pirate groups
have already figured out a way of disabling it or tricking it if so.

Don't you have any EBs or Game stores where you are. They all have 10 day
'no-quibble' money back guarantees in the UK.

No, the technology you are talking about is called "Fade", which they came
up with themselves.

Codemasters started using it with Operation Flashpoint.  Basically, the game
will start to "fade" away if you are playing with a no-cd crack.  In
Operation Flashpoint, the way it worked is that after a few minutes of
playing the game, the FPS would start to go down, your mouse/keyboard input
would start to get sluggish, your guns would be extremely inaccurate, etc
etc.

I guess the their theory was that they would go ahead and allow the game to
be played, but it wouldn't be an enjoyable experience for the person that
didn't actually pay for it.

The irony is that my legit store-bought copy of Operation Flashpoint
wouldn't work AT ALL until I downloaded the no-cd crack, and it has worked
perfectly ever since...

Surely 'Codemasters' is the wrong name ?!?!

ya i agree
that degrading software is a load of shit.  my dloaded coppy ( i got it over
2 weeks ago) had 3 full isos which installed without a problem, and all i
did was do the make icon on desktop and the game runs perfectly.

but damn is it a nice game :)
