How to build steering wheel?

I used to see plans on there about how to build a good steering/pedal
controller with old steering wheels, pedals and some joystick parts...do
these plans work?  Anyone tried them?  Can anyone please repost or e-mail
me the plans?

I messed around with some of those ideas, then attempted to make a
steering wheel unit (just a prototype).  I discovered that I'd have
to gear down the steering wheel to have more than 15 degrees or so
of turning....   Well, after about 4-5 hours of goofing around and
realizing how much effort this was really going to be-
I bought the T2 set for $99 at Circuit City.
(I think my time is worth *somethin'*)  I'd rather be racing....

Hi Vincent, I'm also in Engineering at the U of A, and you can view my
plans for building a steering wheel at my University Page.  It's at

http://gpu.srv.ualberta.ca/~chudson/casey.htm

The materials are cheap, at about $30 total.  You buy one of those cheap
CH joysticks (the tiny $20 model), and use it's electronics.  Then it's
just a matter of building the hardware and attaching the joystick guts.
I've built one for myself and one for a friend, and we both prefer them
to thrustmaster wheels and pedals.  Easy to build, cheap, and very
effective - it's a good design.  There's even someone out there on the
net who's used the plans themself, and says it works great.

Have a look, and I think you'll be happy with the finished product.

I did end up making the wheel.  You don't have to do much gearing if you
get the right pot for about 3 dollars.  Total it cost me $30 including a
$20 Grant steering wheel.  It it very easy to build, it took me three
hours total, but I did not build the pedals.  It has a very realistic
feel and it is also very strong.  If you don't want to spend the $100 on
a T2, I highly recomend going this way.

==================

Hmmmmmm... Maybe that was the whole problem.   Now that I have one
setup, I may try the build-your-own for the second.   I wasn't having
much luck - mostly because I didn't have the patience.

Check out Wally's WWW site at :

http://www.oz.net/~wottenad/

I made a steering wheel/pedals setup over the Easter
holidays, the results were excellent.
I will not use keys or joystick again for
F1GP, ICR2  etc.

cheers

Walt Ottenad has a complete & very detailed web site dealing with
homebuilt wheels & pedals at http://www.oz.net/~wottenad. It gives you
complete instructions along with a bunch of pictures to guide you
along in your project. I just finished building a set & they work
great!! I had some strange problems along the way & Wally was very
helpful. I would strongly recommend building a set.
