Have you ever seen how little damage there is to a tree after it's been
whomped by a vehicle?
Apart from torn bark, the trunk of a tree that is no more than 300mm in
diameter will be unscathed if collected by a modern vehicle in a side-on
impact.
In fact, the tree will withstand the impact slightly better than a timber
power pole of the same diameter as the living wood has more resilience and
shock-absorbing qualities.

I have seen an immature Plane Tree with a Mercedes 300 sedan folded around
it and all four occupants were dead on impact.
The car had to be prised apart to get it off the tree and most of the damage
to the trunk of the tree was done during that operation.

Bruce.

A stock Escort Cosworth will only do 140mph maximum.

And the tree (which was obviously at fault here) would be no more.

I seriously doubt that that car would ever reach 155 mph. (248km/h!)

(whats this got to do with r.a.s anyway - Mr. CEO :o)

When I was in the army, three guys in my bataloin (sp?) killed themselfs in
an old Opel Ascona.  They "exited" the road at arpund 100mph - hit a tree
that was about a foot+ thick - which they chopped down like a thoothpick
before they stopped in another.

That photo's got to ba a hoax imho - not to mention the caption.

Not 155mph and not on the autobahn.

It was apparently a Ford Escort, somewhere in the UK, and the driver
survived.

Ah, thanks.  Like I said, where was the REST of the car?  I didn't *think* that
was the whole thing...

Well spotted, Eldred. I was trying to work out where the driver would have
been. No wonder I couldn't work it out!
