I was going to ask *the* question, but www.deja.com saved me from
acquiring an enemy for life. :-)

One question does beg an answer, but I'll just keep reading old threads.
Seems safer.

"Why does Andr take it so personally?"

I have now gone through the old threads and the way I see it, the
"story" went like this:
1) Rambo announced GPAL. Andr was happy.
2) Rambo announced imminent release. Andr was very happy.
3) Rambo disappered. Andr was puzzled.
4) Rambo reappeared. Andr was cautiously optimistic.
5) Rambo disappeared. Andr was borderline homicidal. GPAL becomes a
dirty word.

I haven't able to locate a thread that explains why people in general
went from "Ah well, vapourware" to "We do not talk about GPAL". Seems to
have happened almost overnight.

Cheers,
Jens

P.S. For Andr: If I were coding the next great GPL application, would
you be interested in beta-testing? (No smily).

IT was a group thing actually outta kindness to Andre.  We all swore an
oath not to mention Gpal again.  Anyone who violated this oath and mentioned
Gpal online would be visited my many diverse evils.  Yes you guessed right,
a pack of lawyers and Nvidia driver coders.  So you see, We have much to
lose by even mentioning Gpal and do all we can to save Andre further grief
by NOT talking about Gpal even when others bring the subject up.  It's the
least friends can do right?

So there's no truth to the rumour that GPAL will support WSC as well?

Oops! My apologies, Andre.  I really should have placed some sort of warning

Correct.

GPAL RELEASED TONIGHT!! These words still echo through my mind daily..

Yes.. Rambo asked for betatesters and ofcourse I mailed him
immediately. The night before the release the betatesters would get a
copy. A bit short time to betatest it, but at least we could check if
there weren't any main problems on different systems.

Then I got a mail from Jack that we had to wait a couple of hours
before we would get the beta, he -only- had a slight problem with the
installer.

Well.. despite of numerous emails, that was the last thing I heard
from Jack. Suddenly he didn't appear on RAS anymore, didn't respond to
my emails, and that pissed me off big time.

Then I and others started to worry that something bad might have
happened to Jack.. but a couple of months later he came back here
telling he had a system crash, never made a backup of his software and
all was lost.
I never believed that, looking at the way things went.

Now indeed Jack did not owe us anything and I'm gratefull for every
contribution people are making for GPL, especially since I have no
skills to add something usefull in the form of addons myself.

But disappearing without a word after building all the hype, ignoring
mails, not giving a reason why he suddenly disappeared, THAT pissed me
off. Just a simply mail 'sorry man, I ***ed up, GPAL will never see
the light of day' would have been enough.

I hope you can understand why now and my cynism about WSC.. I'm fully
convinced Chris and Tony are extremely dedicated to WSC and the
project is still alive, but it's that information stop that annoys
me.. at least SAY there's an information stop (and WHY would be nice
too).

Andre

Ofcourse.. as long as you don't disappear without giving any reason
I'd be happy too.

So, considering that all the screen shots I've seen (sadly missed the
ones on Simbin) are of cars mostly not even run in Sportscar
Championship events anymore (early Panoz coupes, Ferrari 333SPs, McLaren
GTR-1s), and that the series isn't even called "WSC" anymore (FIA
Sportscar Championship, FIA GT Championship), is the first West
Brothers' release going to be called "WSC Legends"?

Hmmm, no.

Present, past, future cars.  It makes no real difference.  They can call it
whatever they want, you know ;)

...

Didn't he come back and offer the source for some developer? There was
some dispute about 'why not just put the source up for download' but
he wanted to maintain a 'good' home and it ended there I think.

There *is* an information stop. :)
Not sure why though, there's no reason anymore to do so, except for
perhaps devote more time into development instead of PR (reason
enough), and hopefully to surprise us for X-Mas. :)

In any case, get a credit card.

Granted the McClaren F1 is no longer racing much.  BUT!.  Panoz is still
using the OLD roadster, even after building a new model, the old one just
works better, and they are updating the old roadster for more campaigning
this year in ALMS.  Also....Somebody has found a Ferrari 333sp and will be
running it at the 2002 Rolex 24hours.
So...sommmmmme of the WSC cars are still clanking around out there.
