Actually, it claimed 5 cars. Should have been fixed before they
started the race really, but I guess they didn't see how big the
problem was until a couple of laps had been done.

They claim to race in the rain, but the sad reality is their
cars handle like ***in the rain.  Or their drivers suck
so bad compared to F1 that they don't know how to
drive in the rain. Take your pick ;-)

I partly agree, but pick up your videotape of Portland 97. A fantastic
race in drying conditions.

I was there!  We didn't know who won until we got to the car and turned on
the radio.  It was that close....
if you have the replay....you can actually see my white rain hat.....I was
on the first row(just to the right of center) of the bleacher seats at the
the festival curves.  Watch any incar camera view as they take the first
right hand turn after the main straight...there's my big white hat!!  :)

I'll do. I got the whole race on video with Ben Edwards and Jeremy
Shaw commentating. They almost jumped out of the box when Mark
Blundell won it with 0.027 s.

Well, I counted Tracy/Herta/Wilson as a 'racing incident'...

I consider myself a CART fan, so this is not meant as an F1 vs. CART flame
or any such thing.  But I had been thinking even prior to this race that
CART's recent rain races have been seriously embarassing.  So why is that?

I think there are probably a couple factors at work here;  first, CART
is more competitive than F1 (the equipment is more equal, I mean), so the
cars are closer together more often.  This leads to more wrecks under any
circumstances, but is even worse in the rain.  Second, the turbo motors
may be more difficult to handle in the rain than F1's atmospheric ones,
as the power comes in more suddenly.  And finally, the fact that CART
brings out a full-course yellow with a pace car after every incident
greatly increases the spectator's *perception* of the crash.  In rainy F1
races, plenty of cars do go off, but you don't notice as much because it
doesn't interrupt the race the way it does in CART.  And then of course
with the field all bunched up for a restart, you have all the ingredients
you need for a second crash when the green flag comes back.  So maybe
CART just needs to invest in some of those cranes that F1 has.  ;)

But at any rate, I really don't believe that the average F1 driver is
particularly superior to the average CART driver.
