but since I upgraded the computer
it will only work in vga mode. The area to adjust the graphics into svga
mode is shaded out?

If you have a new motherboard, etc., look around in your BIOS-setup,
and see if there might be a setting for VESA 1.2 compatibility. I
bought a new MB recently (ASUS P2B-F), and it had to be enabled for
things to run properly.
