Did the West Brothers concept get sold to an unsuspecting company?  I mean
one hell of hard way to market Teddy Bears...

Sounds interesting, although the claims they make have been made before.
Still, it could be good, and at the very least it sounds open to community
development.  Wonder how they are getting around the Sony exclusive license?
Perhaps they will completely avoid all mention of F1 and other trademarked
terms, hence the title.  As long as there is a way for the user to put the
correct names in that wouldn't bother me a bit.

Non-current cars, or pseudo-names, perhaps?  There was some buzz and some
screenies of something that sounded like this floating around Italian sim
sites a year or so back; rumor was Milestone was involved.  Anyone still got
any pics hiding deep in the recesses of their (obviously too-big) HD's?

Well, LAGO certainly makes exceptional terrain for the flight sim series.
Having bought their meshes for my "hometown" of Switzerland and having
climbed a lot in the Alps, the accuracy was jaw-dropping.

Now, this means nothing about their ability to make a racing sim of course.

Well, the article says Milestone is involved, and considering that their
version of EA Superbike was (perhaps still is) one of the most beautiful
sims, I'm encouraged.

Here's a link to a site which has four screen shots.

http://www.ggmania.com/?smsid=13966

Judging by those screens, the graphics don't look very impressive. IMHO, F1
2001 looked way better. Of course graphics aren't everything (that's were
the mod community step in), and I don't know at what stage of development
these screens are from. The most interesting thing about those screens is
the fact that they would appear to have a FIA license. How can this be given
Sony's recent deal?

"Fatbob"said:

An FIA licence really dont mean crap....  as it only allow you to use the
names F1 or Formula 1 World Championship (or something in that ballpark)...
What you really need though, is a FOCA (Formula One Contructors Assosiation)
lisence, a license from all drivers, circuits and more..

Take a look at the 'credits' of any Papy sim - and you'll get the idea of
how much really is needed.

I would think F1 licenses would be much easier to acquire than NASCAR.
For F1 all you need is FIA which covers the sport and tracks and FOCA
which covers the teams, cars, and drivers.  NASCAR requires
negotiating with each individiual track owning body, each team, each
sponsor, each driver, etc etc in order to get rights for everything.
Seems a pain in the ass to me when you could just make a CART sim.

Just out of curiosity, how popular are the open wheelers in the US these
days compared to Nascar?

It's kind of sad really.  Before the IRL/CART split CART and NASCAR
were very nearly dead even in popularity.  Since then of course NASCAR
has boomed and open wheeled cars, aside from Outlaws, have become less
popular.

CART still packs the stands however.  If they had better TV coverage I
think they'd be fine.
