Arrghh! All this abuse! I'm going to kill myself!! ;-)

In case you've missed it (most of the world seems to of!) heres what
wrong at The Pits.

We use shared  webspace on Demon's Second server.

We use it for two reasons.

1) Its free.
2) Its also free.

We have no control over where the routing goes how its gets you, or
how the server is run.

I've been told that recently there have been a lot of OS crashes on
the server and in true Demon style, no-one seem to be bothered to get
off there arses and fix it!!!!!!! >:-(

It seems that people in Austrailia and certain areas of America are
worst affected by this.

Although most of the network runs on 2Mb lines, if it gets routed out
via crowded T1 lines, etc. it does tend to grind to a halt.

Why didn't you e-mail me direct! I would of sent you a copy!
Apologies if you did but I get that much e-mail that I probably
forgot.

If you need a copy you can get it from:

ftp://didnt.doit.wisc.edu/PublicFiles/Racing

Arghh! Why didn't you say!!!!!!! ;-)

I've put out loads of messages in this group asking for people to
mirror The Pits. The whole site is only about 2.6Meg!!!!!

I've got one lined up for the next update (should be Feb 5) but I'm
still looking for more!!!

If you want to be mirror site just say so! Each update I place a large
recursed ZIP file in a restriced access directory for Mirror sites to
retreive. All you have to do is copy it to your server and unzip it!

Please, everyone! If you can mirror The Pits please let us know.

I've got one lined up in the US but were looking for one in Oz and
Europe.

Well...after trying NUMEROUS times over the past several weeks since Jed
announced this, I have YET to get a completely successful download from
the pits.  Jed? Are they running a 4800 baud modem over there or what?

Is there someone out there who can email this to me...I can handle either
uuencoded or zipped and MIME attached.  I promise that in return, I will
post it on MY Website, and if Jed would allow me, I'll put up a pointer
to the pits....my website is REALLY REALLY pitiful right now, since I do
not know HTML yet.  Give me a couple weeks tho...I'll have it looking
reasonably presentable.

Jed...I have ~10 megs of space to work with for my website...I can put up
the utilities if you'd like.  No Demo's tho..those are too big.

this post, I won't get it.  My computer crashed while I was using the
newsreader in my account, and my dead login is still using the
newsreader, and I can't get in.  send a separate email to the above
address and I'll get it.

Thanks,
Bill

I'm about to go off-topic here!

How did you achieve that?  When I asked them for a measly 500Kb for my
F1GP pages, they just came back with a straight and firm "NO!" :-(

To back Jed up on this one, as far as I know, Demon only have two T1
lines out of their system to the U.S.A. and Europe.  Even worse, packets
that are going to be routed to Europe have to do an 8000km round trip
via the East Coast of the U.S.A. before they reach their destination.
It's a ridiculous situation, but if any of you are having trouble
accessing pages on Demon's WWW server, this is the reason.  Just imagine
what it's like for us: *every* site in the U.S. and Europe is as slow as
this :-(

To get better performance, I'd suggest you pick a time that falls within
U.K. office hours, preferably sometime during the morning U.K. time.  At
these times of the day, traffic on the T1 lines is significantly less.

<on topic part of message:>

Is there any news on the ICR II -> NASCAR conversion utility yet?  I'm
bursting to race by BTCC "NASCARs" around Road America and Elhart Lake!

Steve.

Its one of those "You scratch my back and I'll scratch your
situations"

Tell me about it.

Thats why our US mirror is going on a server that seems to provide
quick access from the UK all the time (thanks Jan!). In theory if we
can get to it quick, OZ and the rest of America can too.

If I want something from the states I have to download it at 2am to
get a constant 3.6k/sec

So am I, however the guy who wrote it is on Compuserve and doesn't
seem to post here. Anybody got any news?

Hey, don't worry Jed. Far as I'm concerned "The Pits" is just totally
zippy! Superb access times - makes a change from trying to contact U.S.
sites when the net is sloooooooow.

Cheers!
John
