Passing before S/F line?

by Jim Test » Fri, 17 May 2002 12:16:10

Tonight in a league race at The Rock, I went low on a restart after a
caution because I was warping, and sent an autochat message for the
cars behind me to "Pass HIGH".

They did, and one of the drivers came on and told me that caused him
to be black-flagged.

I always thought it was ok to pass HIGH before the start finish line
when going green from a caution.

Is it not?

Thanks...

You can pass high without penalty after the green flies.

Yes it is ok to do that.  Something else happened, maybe he passed you
before the green was waived ?

I  think the secret phrase was "I was Warping"that can cause problems with
the game recognizing YOUR position on the track.

Yessir...it sure can.  But I wasn't warping at the time I allowed the
pass.  I was just trying to be safe because I had been warping a
little (I'm on cable) a couple of laps back.

Thanks for the input though...and I agree with it.

Excuse me but could you give some examples of the symptoms of warping for a
newbie.  I also have a cable modem and thus far have not had problems
through a few races.

Sure...although I have found out that the symptoms might be different,
depending on which type of connection is used.

When I connected with a 56K modem, I could tell I was warping if
everybody else blinked out.  Both on the track, and also on my F2
display.  If other cars are blinking out individually, that indicates
that THEY are warping.  But if everybody disappears from my
screen/display at the same time, then that's ME that's warping.

Like I said...that was when I was using a 56K modem

Now that I'm on Broadband Cable, I don't normally have any problems
with me warping.  But this time, I had no idea that I was doing it
until the driver behind me told me that I was blinking in and out.
And I was the only one.

But everybody else stayed on the screen for me in that instance.  So I
didn't even know that I was.  Maybe something to do with the
sending/receiving speed of the modem or something.

I don't know

And welcome to the group.

Thank you for the explanations.  It appears that I did warp out once.  All
the cars disapeared but as I am usually racing like the wind at the tail end
of the pack it didn't (appear to) cause any problems.

If I see the same symptoms again I'll pull off to the apron.

Thanks again.

PS  This WAS with cable modem though ???

People with Cable Modem's are just as vulnerable to internet "traffic
jams" as people on dial up, if a certain router between you and the
server is too busy to let al the traffic through in a timely manner,
there's little you can do about it, and little your ISP can do either if
it's not one of their routers

However, if this happens often and at different servers, you might want
to run a traceroute to the servers you race on most often to see where
the problem might be
