The keyboard is (effectively) a digital device (eg: on or off only) and
when you press a button to steer, you either have "full" left lock or
"full" right lock and nothing in between, so GP4 sorta "smooths" this out
for you, (eg: takes control during turns) otherwise the car would be
careering across the road every time you pressed the button.
If you use a wheel (analogue) the controller is progressive and the car
turns as much or as little as you want (eg: it is almost infinitely
variable) depending on your steering input through the wheel, and is
therefore much more controllable.
Plus, a wheel just feels more natural when playing a driving game/sim!
What are you waiting for? go get one...

thanks for the reply. so there is no steering assistance from the game
at all after I get a joystick/wheel?
I was hoping that was the case, as I think its an absolutely great
game, although was initially quite dissapointed when I discovered that
you couldnt control the car properly at all...
I remember playing the first f1gp on the amiga 11 years ago. That had
the same problem, come to think of it, although I never really noticed
it at the time.

If you are using an analogue device (eg: wheels and pedals) you have the
option to turn steering assistance on and off via the menu screen options.
But turning it off is recommended.
If you use a digital device (eg: keyboard) the steering assistance is
always on, and you cannot turn it off.
