GPM - questions

I am new to this game. I have installed patches 1.01 and 1.02 and am
constantly running into the same problem ( I know the game is old and
I guess this has been discussed before, so please excuse me): I keep
running out of fuel.
I won't discuss the mess than happens during 'Test' sessions, when a
driver really runs out of fuel and is retired although the car might
be towed back to pits and there are two other cars waiting for him
there, as this is obviously a bug.
I first started running the McLaren team, and Mansell ran out of fuel
in his first two races, with 15 laps of fuel left during the first and
21 laps of fuel in the second race.
Then I restarted the race managing the Jordan team. Same thing. I have
ran 8 races now and at every race I have at least one driver who DNFs
because he's out of fuel, sometimes both. I have tried running the
race with all 'orders' to max (i.e. do not conserve fuel, tires,
etc.), at the default settings, at min settings - same resuts
everytime. And they seem to retire at the same laps.
Is this a bug? Else is there a way to fix it (i.e. develop better and
better EMS'es)? In all those races, I have only seen one computer
controlled driver run out of fuel, but I am not sure if this happened
because he really ran out of fuel. This seems to happen to my cars
only.
Does anyone else experience this?

Is Microprose still working on patches for GPM? In Moscow where I live
the software market is young and the retail 'culture' is very low - no
store allows to return a game once bought, for any reason. This is the
5th MP game that I bought. After the big and total disappointments I
had with Across the Rhine and GPM and the gripes with GP2, I guess
this will be it, I'm about to swear not to risk my money with MP
anymore. [Don't tell me to try demos first:) If they were more or less
representative of the final game - OK, but usually one expects more of
the final release :]
