I wiped out Bruce McLaren last night - I went to pass him in turn 5 at
the Glen. He turned in on me and we both skidded to the outside of the
track. His car slammed straight into the ***end of the guardrail, next
to the hay bales. It ended up atop the barrier minus its two front
wheels and on fire. I finished up about 150m down the track near turn 6
with the right side of my car missing...!

Haven't you got anything else to do - you don't NEED this much practice.

Do some extra homework - you know it makes sense

How about we test you on the highway code before qualifying - err better not
that was a while ago now!

Cheers

I feel bad... for myself! I would've been dead, too, after an online
race at (where else) Monza. On the opening lap I was in about 4th or 5th
coming out of the second Lesmo. All was well, until the Eagle in front
of me decided to do some lawnmowing (all 4 wheels off) on the right,
just before the bridge. Just as I was almost past, he veered back onto
the track and knocked me right into the left side of the bridge abutment
at about 170 mph. OUCH!

You mean you killed Lorenzo a second time.

He was killed ( for real ) in Monaco at the chicane after the tunnel near
the port.  Can't remember the year, 68/69 maybe.  But I remember this; it
was the first F1 race that I ever saw.  Back in those days, F1 coverage was
very limited here in Canada.  Only once in a while, Wide World of Sports on
some American channel,  would show races other than "round and round" oval
stock car/indy type of races.

I got hooked on F1 from that day in Monaco ( for reasons other than
Bandini's death ) and I remember Bandini's crash.  Big fire and all.  T'was
not a pretty sight.

The crashes in GPL are amazing to say the least. I cringe
when my car crashes. What amazes me is after a horrific
crash they can still manage to put their arm up at you! I
too grew up in Canada and no one's crash compares to Gille's
Villeneuve's at Zolder in 1982. It was a sad day for
Canadians that May afternoon. But I feel that the crashes
and the fact that car racing flirts with danger is what
makes it so exciting. Think about how even in a sim when you
push the edge you almost touch the wall or the wheels of
another car, you r adrenaline is pumping, and your hands
sweat. Like they say "Car racing will never be safe, but it
can be safer".

My God man, where'd you find this thread?  I started it over two months
ago.  Sounds like somebody needs to clear out the spool on their news
server. :)

Better keep an eye on him in future.  I stuffed Jack Brabham into the fence in
the first turn at the 'Ring the other day, and he got me back on the restart!
Braking into the left hander after the second straight, I was peeking under
Gurney and WHAMMO!  Brabham flies into my rear, sending me flipping over the
fence!  I looked at the replay over and over from every view and......he just
flat punted me; no braking at all!  "Take that, you squirrelly yank!"  Vengeful
***.

I've killed my fair share of the AI drivers in my time, however, to get
their revenge, Surtees has killed me a number of times. Most recently at the
'Ring where he decided to park his car just over an absolutely flat-out
blind crest.

Favourite places for major AI/player deaths:

Burnenville at Spa
Antoniusbuche at the end of the long straight at the Ring
The fast right hander with trees on the outside at Rouen (can't remember the
name)

Was in the '67 Monaco race. It was pretty much an awful incident from
what I've read;
his car turned upside down on the exit of the chicane, he was okay, not
that bad a hit, really.
Then it caught fire.
No marshals were kitted to help him soon enough. People watching the
race said that whenever there
was not a car passing, they could hear him scream. To add to this, a
helicopter from a TV company
wanted to get a close look, and the wind from the rotors didn't help
putting the fire out.

Makes you feel lucky not to have to see such bizarre accidents in
motorsports today.

Bandini was killed at Monaco in 1967, this was not the only
driver to be burned alive and to death. In 1973 Roger
Williams was killed at Zandvoort. It was only his second
career race. His car too became inverted on a guard rail and
caught fire. The marshals did not have fire extinguishers
and stood around watching him burn to death. Francois
Cervert was also killed later that same year at Watkins
Glen. His car was going through the esse's and flipped over
on a guard rail, it carried on along the guard rail for 200m
or so. The guard rail acted like a knife. Jackie Stewart was
so distraught over his teamates death that he took two more
half hearted laps and promptly retired.

I kept a lot of articles from when all you Americans had GPL and us
Europeans didn't and this was one of them. I just wanted stuff to read
while I waited for it to be released :-)

Wait'll you see how guilty on-line racing is gonna make you.

Yeah we Aussies tend to get a bit vindictive when we feel we have been
