Hey guys.....seeing how you all seem to know a whole lot about PCs......I'm
gonna pick yer brains. I upgraded to an Athlon XP1700+ today. Since then I
have gotten numerous crashes immediately after booting. I get the a little
window saying "can't load...loadqm, run32dll....my explorer
crashes......there are a few more I can't think of offhand.........any
ideas???  I even got a freeze up on IE.    These things were NOT happening
beforehand. It all started on my reboot with the new chip.    HELP ME !!!!!!

                                                TIA Verne

How hot is the chip getting?  Did you apply the grease and heat sink
properly?  How about some more system specs.

you've lost some files...or windows has lost track of them.  The ugly
solution is to re-install windows.. Perhaps somebody else will have a more
detailed rescue.

ps...when you reboot after such a freeze.  Go to your bios and check if it
has a temperature function.  Find out what temp the cpu is as soon as
possible after a lockup.

I recently upgraded from a duron 800 to an xp1700 on my ASUS A7V133 and had
similar problems when I tried to run the pc at 133mhz front side bus.

It was stable at 100mhz, but there was no joy in it.

Turns out it was dodgy ram and replacing what I had with two nicely matched
sticks did the trick.

Regards,

Willard.

A m810 series. On a reboot I checked in my bios/cmos?? and the chip was

crashing all the time and just getting in here to post my troubles is a
"WHOOOOOOLE lottle fun".   Lemme know if any more info is needed.

mine's percolating at 109F and generally in the summer runs hotter than
that..
one way to check heat lockups is to open up your case and blow a big ol desk
or box fan into the case.  If it still locks up, then Heat isn't your
problem.
You may have to update your motherboard bios to accomodate the faster
chip.  You can also try slowing the front side bus down to 100 instead of
133 and see if that helps.
Who's got a hardware debugging site URL???

Each manufactuer has their own websites..but finding out the exact brand
is sometime tougher than finding new bios versions.  (unless you have the
box!)

That is not too hot. Something may be amiss in your bios settings. Try going into your bios and make sure the new 1700+ is identifying correctly. Check that the fsb is set correctly. You might also try loading optimized defaults in the bios. Also, how old is your bios version? Perhaps you may need to flash it to a more current version, but I wouldn't try it while the system is unstable. I would put the older processor back in and make sure it is stable prior to flashing the bios.

Beware -- if there is a problem while trying to upgrade your BIOS, it
will render your comupter *UNUSABLE* and you very well may have to order
a new BIOS chip from the company that manufactured the board. I had to
do this once with an Abit mobo. Good thing is, the chip was only $10.

Did you change motherboards as well, or just the processor?

If you changed motherboards too, you need to reinstall Windows fresh.

Yes, some will tell you that you don't have to do this, especially with
Win2K and XP, but in my experience it's false economy and almost always
leads to a problem of _some_ sort.

If you just changed the processor, I don't see a real reason for it.

Good point.  The higher processor speeds may be pushing the RAM harder and
thus showing it's short-commings.

These are also very good recommendations.

It is also _possible_ that there is an issue with the on-board cache on your
new processor.  I've seen this cause similar problems on IBM office
computers back when the 300xl was shipping with PII's.
