Diamond MX-300 Compatibility (AMD systems)

by Ashley » Sat, 22 Mar 2003 08:21:10

Hi folks,

I'm very close to buying one of the older type AMD mobo's (Abit KG-7, Asus
A7v133-c, or ECS K7s5a) but I'm concerned that my Diamond MX-300 may not
work in these boards due to compatibility issues.

Does anyone know if this card will indeed work on such a mobo?
The system will be as follows
AMD T-bird 1.2ghz
ECS K7s5a
Diamond MX-300 soundcard
128mb SDRAM
WD 8.4Gb hdd
SMC something or other ethernet (usb)

It should work just fine as long as you disable the onboard sound on the
motherboard.

I'm running a KG-7 with an MX-300 and Win 98.  Works great.

Thx for the feedback lads,
Perhaps I should also be more specific. Does the Monster Sound II Gameport
driver still work on these AMD boards or do u have to use the 'standard
gameport' setting (u can check this in control panel --> Game
Controllers --> advanced

cheers

Yes, I'm using the Monster Sound II gameport.  Best thing about this soundcard.

Hi Ashley,

I don't think you'll have problems with the motherboard. If it has a onboard
sound/gameport you should be able to disable it in the bios, and yes you
should be able to utilise the Monster II Gameport Driver under Win9x/ME
only. If you use the Standard Gameport Port Driver you lose the
optimisations such as high resolution and smooth jitterless response. From
what I can tell, under Win2K/XP the card utilises the standard gameport
drivers from Microshaft, as Aureal did not release optimised reference
drivers before they went under.

Not sure about the sound card, but the best board you listed there is the
ABIT KG7.

There are a few BIOS tweaks you need to make for stability if you install an
Athlon XP processor, but you can find them on the KG7 FAQ site.

If you want to use the MX-300 with Windows XP, then please pay a visit
to Quantex Zone (http://www.quantex.tech.nu) for a fix for the control
panel and sound dropout fix (may not be required).

With the XP patch, Vortex 2 cards are working fine in XP, albeit
without reverb.
