OT: Boot Problem After unplugging PC

Everytime I have to unplug my computer for a coming storm, when I go to boot
it back up, it will not boot, until I
take the video card and put it back in. After that boots and runs fine,
anyone ever heard of such a problem

Are you properly shutting it down before unplugging?  I just turn off the
power strip and cross my fingers.  I had one motherboard that would hang
sometimes and would not respond to the pushing the power button or the
keyboard method of turning on the box.  I would have to pull the plug for
about 15 seconds, long enough to allow an onboard LED light to fade.  Then
plug it back in and off it would go.  Replaced the motherboard and the
problem went away.

a. Buy a UPS and never shut down your computer.  This is the easiest,
and probably the best solution.  UPS's are extremely cheap these days,
and powering off and on a computer is taxing to the hard drive.

b. Do you know if you have an Abit motherboard?  I have an Abit IT7 that
sufferes from a similar problem.  Usually letting it sit for a few
hours, banging on the side of it, and swearing alot gets it to work.  My
solution was to buy a Mac, but that requires a few $'s.

I would jump right on the CMOS Backup Battery.  It may be weak or dying, and
it sounds like your board is losing some sort of configuration setting.

Sounds like you have a dead battery in your CMOS (BIOS) "battery backup" on
your mobo.  Replace it and then your BIOS will be saved when the computer is
unplugged.  If your CMOS battery isn't working, when you unplug you computer
the BIOS is lost for the next boot up.....thus any hardware configuration is
also lost.  Most computers won't boot without at least a video card present
in the system.  Other PCI devices are re-detected on the subsequent
boot....but not the video card.  That's my "guess" as to what is causing
this.....there are some other less likely things, but try this first.

Tom

If that were the case, wouldn't he see the "windows is installing the driver
for your hardware..." crap?

Not always.  CMOS Batteries can cause some really weird sh.... stuff to
happen sometimes :)
