At present I am using a 6800 ultra,at 1280x1024 with no aa or
af,framerates in the 50s dropping to the low 30s with lots of trees.
Is the X800xt better than that?

I hear the game has some issues with the ATI cards, especially with
the drivers, so putting your hope in a switch to an ATI card may be in
vain. You could also be CPU-limited, in which case any gfxcard
wouldn't help.

Then again I don't have either of those cards, and I don't know what
CPU you've got so don't take my word for it.

I use a  ATI x800pro, at 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 8x AF, and it is
smooooooth..

I haven't got any problems at all with the drivers. I run a Abit NF7 board

lines appearing on roads and occassional plygon flashes (very rare) but I
believe a driver update is due to solve these.

I agree with the comment on the CPU if that isn't up to it it's going to
cause problems in performance.

Which I am, but I wouldn't say stuck with, it's fantastic. The prolem
at 1600*1200 is the DVI interface which apparently is at it's limit.
60fps wil do me anyway.
