F1CS2K multiplayer and graphics

Hey RASers,

I have been getting into this sim a little recently, mostly because a
friend and I are trying to do some head to head racing online.  My question
mostly concerns the multiplayer and why it is so flaky.

We both have cable modems, which means good speed, even if maybe a bit
of excess ping time.  In NFSPU, I usually see about 100-120 from him.  NFSPU
multiplayer works great for us.  No problems there.  When we tried to do
some online racing with F1CS2K, it was one stupid problem after another.

First, with him as host, we tried to start a race and I got a black
screen saying "waiting for server" which never went away.  The next time I
just got dumped to the desktop. The third time, he got dumped to the
desktop.

Then I tried to host and noticed the "data rate" adjustment.  I turned it
down to 5 and we were able to start a race.  It lasted about a lap and a
half before he was dumped from the game after spinning out in a gravel tap.
We tried one more time and I turned the data rate adjuster all the way down
to 4, the lowest it would go.  We got through about 10 laps of a 20 lap race
at Imola.  He spun out again as I was chasing him, got back on the track and
start racing again, and later reported to me that the game immediately
reported me to be 1 1/2 minutes ahead.  He waited on the track for a few
minutes for me to come by and I never did, though I was racing around
another 5 laps after his crash.  He  eventually just left the game thinking
I wasnt there.

WHat can be done to make this work better?  This is a total joke.  Is
the multiplayer that bad in this sim?  We have connected just fine with
other sims, notably NFSPU, which we can drive for hours with no troubles.

Secondly, what is with the crappy graphics in this sim?  I know it's
based on the SCGT graphics engine, but SCGT looks great on my system and
F1CS2K looks like crap.  Total jagginess everywhere.  I have a V5/5500 and
P3/1000/133 and 512 Meg of ram, so I don't think its my system holding me
up.  Is there some secret to making this look a little better?  I tried
turning down the resolution and using FSAA, but it still looks horrible.

At least I am finally able to start getting into an F1 sim, something I
have tried unsuccessfullly to do for a long time.

thanks for any help,

have you tried using the f1rst??  kinda like a mini Vroc
that will allow you to host or join online races.  BlackHole
has a link to the file.
As far as the graphics??  Well the SCGT/F12k series are the single biggest
reason you should use FSAA...:)

FSAA makes SCGT a whole new, pleasurable game.  Course, it doesn't
make you any faster, a fact that I can sadly vouch for.
