Here is a copy of my earlier reply to a similar question.
A bump *** is a soft *** or similar material usually round or cylinder
shape and tapered on one end.
Coil over shocks (shocks with the coil spring on them) use bump ***s on
their shaft
to limit the travel of the shock. That is if your shocks full range of
travel is 2.5" and you install a 1" bump *** then the shock travel is
1.5" plus whatever the *** can be compressed. The shock travel may be at
a different ratio than the suspension travel. For example; if your shock
travels 1.5" and your shock to wheel travel ratio is 1.5 then your ride
height moves 3". Older race cars had softer springs and shocks with a lot of
travel. Bump ***s were used to control how much upward travel of the
suspension as when going over a bump or chassis squat to the ground. Most
newer race cars do not use bump ***s to limit travel. They use stiffer
springs and more skid blocks on the bottom of the car.
