And the reason for the ***drivers are because Microsoft pulled the entire
DX Sound architecture out from under everyone.

Like I said.  It was fine until MS did that.

I ran Vista Ultimate for a month or so and didn't have any major
problems on the system I built with Vista in mind. I did have a lot of
little "glitches" that, over time, made me go back to XP Pro for the
time being. One of my issues is the way Vista handles (or tries to) NV
SLI technology. I run two 8800 GTX cards and SLI would just turn off at
any time Vista wanted it to. I tried every NV Vista driver out there and
there are many. This may be due to the partial implementation of the DX
10 runtimes that are in Vista now and may be fixed when the entire DX 10
suite is released. I didn't have any problems with my onboard Dolby
sound at all. Some of my A/V programs had updates for Vista
compatibility, but a few options were not available anymore due to some
of the security "improvements". I think Vista will be fine after the
first SP and the full DX 10 release for folks with the hardware needed
to run it well. I remember the change from Windows 3.1 to 95 to 98/ME
and then to 2000/XP and like any change it will take some time to iron
out some issues.

They made it better not worse. My audio quality is better in Vista
than XP and Creative loses their monopoly. I know losing hardware
acceleration costs a few fps in games but that's why they are pushing
dual and quad core cpu's.

Exactly. For now I dual boot XP and Vista so I have all bases covered.
Later I may dump XP but I have no reason to because big HDD's are
cheap now so there is no reason not to dual boot. I'm not concerned
about a bit of HHD space what with the footprint of some games out
there now. I dual boot by using the mb's bios to select which HDD to
boot to so each OS is kept intact with no dual boot menu needed. If
one goes down the other will still be bootable without having to edit
the boot menu.

It's not all about games...

Yea, and I was actually talking about for music. I've got an X-Fi
running digital coax to an EMU 0404 USB and then to an Audiolab 8000A
amp with Sennheiser HD595 headphones and Energy Reference Connoisseur
speakers with an Energy S8.3 sub.
