Screw XP; 98 or ME?

Screw XP; 98 or ME?

After the troubles Alison Hine (and others) have had with XP installs, I'm
not going to upgrade to Bill Gates' latest booty-booster after all.

The only question left: 98 or ME?

Ditto that...

I've been running 98SE for 2 years without a single complaint, and ALL my
games/sims work on it! Even the older ones...

Your loss IMHO, but I'm not going to argue with you :-)

Avoid ME if you can, some people are lucky enough to have a trouble free
system with ME installed (Hi Achim), in which case it's a decent enough
OS, most people with home built systems seems to have a fair bit of
trouble though, so I'd recommend 98SE over ME

You're right and you're wrong :-), WinME is an Win9x based OS with some
networking protocols from Win2k, meaning it does networking better than
98SE in some cases, it's a crappy "updated" version of W98 :-)

Never had a single problem with XP pro. IMO its been the best OS out of
Micro$oft yet. The only real negitive is that registration crap. IMO an OS
is just like a game. If you put it on two little hardware its not gonna run
for shit. Now I missed Alison's problems, but from her router thread I got
the feeling that her hardware is not all that new.

I got very weird engine sound in GPL on my XP and SB Live 1024. And a
*** framrateissue on N2002. Also my MSFF have issues with XP with
forced split axis which doesn't work very well with F1 2001. For all
other games and applications i use XP though on my dual-boot system.

Well I guess that explains why online *** was better for me with ME over
Win98. Learn something new everyday. And now that I have that over with I
don't have to do jack the rest of the day. :)

Well I can't say much about the MSFF wheel. My Momo works great on XP.
However everyone in this world would do themselves a big favor by dumping
creative sound cards on *** machines. That is doubly true if you are
using a Geforce video card.

Like Achim you ought to make your system available to MS engineers,
they're dying to find out how you did that :-)

Seriously though, small OEM builders like us stopped offering ME as an
OS alternative a long time ago, too much hassle, we still offer W98SE,
the support and warranty work was way out of proportion, especially
since there was little or nothing wrong with the hardware in the first
place

If we built 5 identical systems I could almost guarantee you that at
least one of them would have issues, yet if you installed a different
OS, Win98/2000/XP/NT4/95 or whatever without changing a thing, the PC
would be as reliable as the next PC and no matter what kind of "burn in"
program or test program you'd run it would report back that the system
was fine, go figure

I'm not doubting that a lot of people run ME just fine, it's just that
it's caused us a hell of a lot work in the past with PC's that are
basically ok, except for the OS :-)
