Mouse Wheels?

Just a couple of thoughts...

What about a steering wheel that could emulate a mouse X- and X+ axis?
The mouse seems to have a better resolution when compared to a pot. Plus
they can be optical, which equals no wear.

Only LSF supports a mouse for steering, IIRC. So maybe it could turn a
pot too, then we'd get the best of both worlds, and still be able to use
it with old games!

The new thrustmaster F1 Ferrari wheel has a virtual keybaord and mouse
driver, eight buttons a 'hat' two F1 style flippers and a hand brake and
throttle paddle.

Most of the early wheels in the end of the 80's/start of the 90's where
actually like that.  I'll email you a picture of such system (it was posted
on the other NG).

Indy 500 featured mouse control.

Instead of sending it to you I've uploaded it on my website at :

The MS FF (probably also non FF) and the new momo use optical encoders for
steering. I'm not aware of any pedals that don't use pots though. It's
probably more a matter of wear than resolution. Don't you think you get the
resolution you need from a pat based steering wheel like say the original
momo wheel?

You can get a wheel adaptor for a mouse on ebay for about $8.
The highest precision for an optical mouse is about 800 dpi. For a ball
mouse its over 1200, some claiming up to 4800.

The end result of the resolution for the MS optical wheels and joysticks is
lower than a pot. I don't know if the firmware in the new MOMO has changed
this, but I doubt it.

Yes, I'm happy with it. But my Momo's pot will still wear out one day.
