NASCAR and INDYCAR tracks interchangeable?

by pens.. » Wed, 13 Sep 1995 04:00:00

I tried moving a NASCAR track to Indycar and vice versa, but it
didn't work.  Is there any way to make it work?  I understand that the
Indycar tracks can't work in the NASCAR's SVGA mode.
I WANT TO RACE AN INDYCAR AT TALLEDEGA!!!!  I bet you could get up
to 260+ m.p.h. there.  I can get up to 235 m.p.h. at Michigan.
Please tell me the tracks are compatible!

They are not compatible. The format of the track data changed from IndyCar
Racing to NASCAR Racing.

But will the track data be interchangable between NASCAR Racing and
IndyCar Racing II?

I'd love to drive Indy cars around Bristol and NASCAR cars around
street circuits.

They are *NOT* compatible.  I remember seeing something like this on
Papyrus's BBS.  While the software used to design the tracks was the same
(I believe) the actual data for each track (and car) is vastly
different.  So, you can't swap 'em over.  Sorry.

Hm. Well, I wouldn't recommend it. The AI will be wrong, the color palette
will be wrong, and the track shots will be missing. It might let you drive
in psychadelic mode, or it might just page fault and die.

Just how much work/money/time etc is involved in creating the tracks for
either of your sims?

I enjoy ICR and NASCAR - but play NASCAR much less because ovals
aren't my sort of racing. Would a whole series of add-ons like the ICR
track pack be a HUGE amount of work.....ie potentially unecconomical?
If, for instance you produced a collection of European tracks, I could
race ICR's at Spa to compare them with F1. Or could run NASCAR's at
Donnington and get the feel of DTM or BTCC racing.

I for one get a lot of pleasure from running a track before watching a
real race there because you feel you know a lot more about what's going
on.....been racing F1GP's recently at Estoril for instance. ICR's
introduction to Lacuna Seca adds to the real racing - yes bikes! -
there.

Any chance of developing a whole sheaf of track-packs for your sims -
preferably useable in either game? Is that technically possible?
Realistic proposition?

Cheers!

I don't have exact figures, but I would guess that it takes a 3D smith
plus an artist a total of about 3 weeks to produce one track. It then
takes about 1 week to tune the AI for that track. (And if you think that
we work 40 hours weeks, well, there's this bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to
sell you... :-)
